A man was arrested and charged with homicide after killing his sister and wounding his niece, according to a statement by the New York Police Department.
The elderly Brooklyn, New York, man allegedly shot and killed his sister yesterday when she tried to evict him, police said.
William Thurmond, 70, was arrested at his home in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, after he allegedly shot and killed his sister and wounding his niece around 10:00 am, police said.
Thurmond was taken to the 67th Precinct house in Brooklyn, where he was charged with criminally negligent homicide.
Detectives believe that the shooting began when Carol Lovell, 63, and her daughter, Crystal Birk, 37, tried to evict the man for not paying his share of the rent, police said.
The women, who live upstairs, confronted Thurmond in the basement of the house, police said.
After a brief discussion Thurmond allegedly shot Lovell in the chest and shot his niece in the head, police said.
Lovell was pronounced dead at the hospital. Birk is expected to be discharged from the hospital soon. The firearm was recovered at the scene, police said.
