The Washington DC area teenager is being charged as an adult for beating and suffocating his baby sister to death, police said Monday.
Johnathan Aguiluc, 14, of White Oak, Maryland, appeared in court on Monday, and the judge denied him bail.
Police said that Gloria Yanes, 39, left her apartment located at 11640 Lockwood Drive around 10:30 pm Thursday to go to work, leaving Aguiluc to care for her two sisters, aged 7 months and 3-years-old.
Aguiluc confessed to police that he hit his newborn sister and then covered her nose and mouth when she did not stop crying.
“He admitted to causing the injuries and putting his hands over her mouth and nose when she was crying,” Montgomery County police Capt, Paul Starks told a local television news station.
When the baby stopped crying, Aguiluc placed her in a car seat, where Yanes found her when she returned home at 5:30 am Friday. A half hour later, she tried to awaken the baby in order to feed her, only to discover that the baby was unresponsive.
Yanes called emergency services and the baby was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:54 am. Authorities said the cause of death was asphyxiation.
