Anti-Semitic attacks in London area jumps 55 percent

The Jewish community in London received a dose of bad news this week.

Anti-Semitic incidents in the U.K. is growing at a fast pace, the Community Security Trust or CST, a volunteer force protecting the British Jewish community, said.

According to a report published by the organization, 640 anti-Semitic incidents were recorded by the CST in 2012, an increase of 5 percent of the 608 anti-Semitic incidents recorded in 2011 and the third highest annual total since records began to be kept in 1984.

The most dramatic increase occurred in the metropolitan area of ‚Äč‚ÄčLondon where there was a 55 percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents, from 203 in 2011 to 314 in 2012.

CST recorded 80 anti-Semitic incidents that included the use of Internet-based social media in 2012, compared to only 12 in 2011. The most common type of incident in 2012 involved verbal abuse directed at people looking like Jews in public.

Fortunately violent anti-Semitic attacks were down, with only 11 percent of the total of 640 anti-Semitic incidents recorded in 2012 to qualifying as such, compared to 16 percent of the total in 2011
