(Scroll down for video) An extremely popular Italian singer chose to skip a major event because of Shabbat, according to press reports in Italy.
The Italian festival della canzone italiana di Sanremo, also known as the Sanremo Italian Song Festival, is a popular singing contest, held annually in San Remo, Italy.
The concert, which was actually the inspiration for the creation of the Eurovision Song Contest, is considered a big deal in the international music scene, so that artists who choose to ignore the competition, better have a very good reason.
The reggae singer of the group, Almamegretta, Raiz, chose to skip the important event because it is being held on Shabbat.
Raiz Gennaro Della Volpe, observes Shabbat, according to a local Italian newspaper.
He informed his team that he will not be available to sing leaving his team with two options, either playing a prerecorded video or sing live without their lead singer.
According to the Italian newspaper, Raiz converted to Judaism many years ago and has remained committed ever since.
The five-day festival held in San Remo, which started in 1951, is both a competition and a song festival that combines live performances with a new best song contest.
