(Scroll down for video) A child who was placed in foster care has begged a judge to keep him there after his parents severely abused him, according to court proceedings in Missouri.

The 17-year-old boy, who was handcuffed to a pole in the basement of his home told a judge Thursday that he does not want to return to his family who allegedly abused and starved him.

The teenager, visibly thin beneath his baggy pants and jacket, joked with the officers of the juvenile court, saying that he had already put on a few pounds after living with his adoptive parents in recent days. He said that they have made him delicious homemade pizza and he’s happy where he is.

But just three days before, the 17-year-old was not happy. Police reports said that his eyes looked desperate when they found him handcuffed to a basement pole in his home.

A neighbor who had not seen the teenager for a while called the Missouri Department of Social Services and the police visited the house. When police arrived, the boy’s stepmother told them he was sleeping in the basement.

Police found him there, handcuffed to a pole. Kansas City police said that the teenager was weak and dehydrated and was shivering on the cold cement floor. The teen told police that his father and stepmother, put him in the basement because of his behavior problems.

The teenager’s parents have not been charged with any crime.
Police said that the teenager has been kept in the basement for the past few months. The father however claimed that the teen was in the basement just for the past few weeks.

On Thursday, the judge ruled that 17-year-old will remain in protective custody with his foster family for now.
The boy’s biological mother was not in court.
