(Scroll down for video) A New York City school caused uproar after a teacher used examples of killing and whipping slaves to teach math, according to press reports in New York.

The school principal said that she was appalled by the assignment that used scenarios of killing slaves and beatings to teach math.
Adele Schroeter has ordered sensitivity training for all staff at Public School 59 in Manhattan after the revelation last month.

The teacher in question wrote fourth grade homework questions that mixed math and social studies, education officials said. The teacher then wrote questions, including One question cited the number of slaves who died while taking over a boat.

The question was how many slaves were still alive. The other question involved a slave who was whipped five times a day and the example asked students to calculate how many times a month the slave was hit.

A teacher said that she was surprised by the questions and later refused to turn the worksheet into another class.
“I looked at the questions and I was like, ‘Wow! This is a little inappropriate,'” Harding Aziza told a local newspaper, saying that the questions were insensitive and violent.

“I found it alarming that this would happen in a state that you would think was more liberal,” Harding said.
The Education Department said the situation was obviously unacceptable. It said that appropriate disciplinary action would be taken.
