Top diplomats across the E.U. are demanding that their governments stop investing in Israel, according to press reports in the United States.
European Union officials say that diplomats are lobbying their governments to discourage investment in Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem territories, which Palestinians claim to be their state.
Officials said Wednesday that the recommendations are part of an internal report, which is not binding on European governments in their reports on the peace process in the Middle East. The diplomats are representing 22 countries, including Germany, France and the United Kingdom.
Parts of the report were published in an Israeli newspaper. E.U. officials confirmed the report.
Diplomats recommended discouraging direct investment which supports the construction of settlements, infrastructure and services.
They also recommended the European countries intensify their efforts to label settlement products that are sold across Europe.
The E.U. claims that Israeli settlements are illegal.
