A woman was on her way to pick up her husband at midnight, when she fell asleep at the wheel killing her instantly and leaving her 2-year-old and 4-year-old stranded at the side of the road.

Passing motorists Kraai McClure and Scott Beautler, stopped to investigate the damaged trees when they found two young injured girls huddling together while their mother’s body was in the car.

26-year-old Jessica Rath of Astoria, Oregon, was on the phone with her husband before she hit the tree.

The girls were taken to a hospital in Astoria, where their father joined them. The 2-year-old was then taken by helicopter to a hospital in Portland, Oregon, where she is expected to make a full recovery.
