(Scroll down for video) Several police officers were caught on video tying and dragging a suspect behind a police vehicle until he died, according to video uploaded to the internet.
They tied his hands to the back of a van and then sped off, dragging the thin taxi driver along the road as a crowd of onlookers shouted in dismay. The death of the man was later confirmed by emergency workers.
The heartbreaking video of the scene is even more worrying because the men who abused the suspect are South African uniformed police officers and the van was a marked police vehicle.
The graphic scenes of the victim fighting for his life shocked a nation accustomed to police violence.
A South African newspaper published a video on Thursday and the video was quickly picked up by other news agencies in South Africa and carried over the Internet. This caused immediate outrage.
“They are there for safety, but we as a people are more afraid of them,” Johannesburg resident Alfonso Adams, said. “You do not know who to trust,” he added.
Some of the people in the crowd who watched the scene unfold in Daveyton township east of Johannesburg shouted to the police and warned them that they are being video recorded.
The police did not seem at all concerned by all the witnesses and the presence of the cameras as they tied Mido Macia, 27-years-old, from neighboring Mozambique, on the back of a police car, with his hands behind his head. At least three police officers were involved in the incident. Macia was found dead in a police cell later that day.
