Authorities said that the elderly woman being cared for at a retirement center in California died after a nurse at the center refused to perform CPR on the woman after she had collapsed.
According to a local newspaper the 87-year-old, Lorraine Bayless, from Glenwood Gardens in Bakersfield, collapsed at the facility around 11:00 am one day, when a staff member called emergency workers, but refused to give the woman CPR.
A Bakersfield television news station reported that the nurse can be heard telling the emergency operator that she does not want to perform CPR. The nurse can also be heard telling the operator that it was against the policy of the retirement center to perform CPR.
An ambulance arrived a few minutes after the call and took the woman to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
The retirement center issued a statement saying protocol was followed.
