(Scroll down for video) After Egypt was hit with millions of locusts last week, the locusts have now crossed over into Israel, according to press reports in Israel.
The swarm of locusts in Egypt has crossed into Israel on Monday, attacking southern Israel near the Egyptian border. The swarm was described as relatively small. Spray planes and other repellents were quickly deployed to attack the unwanted visitors before the situation deteriorates to the extent of the Egyptian plague.
A southern Israeli farmer told an Israeli television news station that the locusts can destroy farms very quickly. The farmer also said that they are watching the situation carefully. Experts said that the situation will depend on wind direction.
Just ahead of the Jewish holiday of Passover, Egypt is suffering a second coming of the plague, according to press reports in Israel.
The Israel Ministry of Agriculture established a hotline on Monday and is asking of Israelis to be vigilant in reporting sightings of locusts to prevent an outbreak.
Locusts have a devastating effect on crop agriculture.
The locusts alert is being issued just before the Jewish holiday of Passover, which tells the biblical story of the Jewish exodus from Egypt. According to the Bible, a plague of locusts was one of the 10 plagues that God struck the Egyptians after enslaving and abusing the Jews.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
