(Scroll down for video) A former Prime Minister of Italy who became famous for loving prostitutes was given a 1 year jail sentence for publishing certain information in a newspaper, according to court proceedings in Italy.
An Italian court sentenced the former Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, on Thursday to a year in prison for publishing a transcript of a recording connected to a banking scandal in 2006.
The 76-year-old will not have to serve the jail sentence until after the appeal process is exhausted in accordance with the Italian law. A higher court can still overturn the lower court ruling as well.
It came amid a political deadlock resulting from the elections last week that left no party able to form a government, although Berlusconi’s center-right formation emerged as the second strongest in parliament.
Berlusconi is in the midst of a series of trials with different cases on charges ranging from tax fraud and paying for sex with an underage prostitute.
After Thursday’s verdict, the former prime minister repeated denials that he was somehow connected with the accusations and said the decision showed that politically motivated judges were conducting a campaign against him.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
