(Scroll down for video) Activist Pamela Geller recently began running advertisements on San Francisco public transportation warning about the risk of Muslim Jihad, according to press reports in California.
San Francisco city buses began carrying the advertisements on Monday and were immediately denounced by several political leaders as an anti-Islamic crusade. Those officials claim that the advertisements are unjustly racist against Muslims as the group is defined by extremism and violence.
Instead of trying to block the advertisements from San Francisco transit, the city accepted the paid advertisements and avoided a risk of a long legal battle for the rights of free speech. City officials said that there would be a public service campaign preaching tolerance and peace.
The bus advertisements were paid for by the American Freedom Defense Initiative or AFDI, the same group behind a similar campaign in New York last year that dealt with the Arab-Israeli conflict as a war between the civilized man and the savage.
“To support the civilized man, Support Israel. Defeat Jihad,” the advertisement stated.
But Scott Wiener, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors who described himself as the only Jewish elected official in the city, said that the AFDI was engaged in a kind of anti-Semitic campaign.
“The Jewish people suffered from stereotypes and caricature,” he said. “We as a community need to stand shoulder to shoulder against these horrible messages,” he told a press conference at City Hall.
“While some courts have found that these advertisements can have the privilege of the First Amendment, that does not mean that we cannot condemn them,” said San Francisco Board of Supervisors President, David Chiu, a former civil rights lawyer.
District Attorney George Gascon said: “We are here to send a clear message that San Francisco will not tolerate Islamophobic intolerance.”Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
