(Scroll down for video) A popular soccer player was slammed after celebrating a goal with a Nazi salute, according to video uploaded to the internet.
AEK Athens midfielder Giorgos Katidis was criticized by politicians, athletes and fellow fans after giving the Nazi salute in celebration of a goal he scored in the Greek league.
The photographs show him giving a Nazi salute after scoring the winning goal in the 84th minute advantage over visiting Veria on Saturday. In one photo, Katidis’ teammate, Roger Guerreiro, looks at him with a puzzled expression.
Katidis, a 20-year-old, pleaded ignorance of the meaning of the arm extended and straightened right hand gesture. He said in his Twitter account that he hates fascism.
AEK German coach Ewald Lienen, said the player does not have an “idea about politics.”
“Now that he understands what this salute represents he will definitely not do it again,” a team spokesperson told a local television news station.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
