The Brazilian doctor who was accused of killing seven patients to free up beds in a hospital intensive care unit may have been responsible for about 300 deaths, according to investigators at the Ministry of Health of Brazil.

Prosecutors said that Doctor Virginia Soares de Souza and her medical team administered muscle relaxants medications to patients, then reduced their oxygen supply, causing death by suffocation at the Evangelical Hospital in the southern city of Curitiba.

De Souza, a widow, who is 56-years-old, was arrested last month and charged with seven counts of aggravated murder in the first degree.

Three other doctors, three nurses and a physiotherapist who worked with De Souza have also been charged with murder.
The Parana state prosecutors said that in wiretaps of telephone conversations de Souza revealed that her motive was to free hospital beds for other patients.

“I want to clear the intensive care unit. It’s making me itch,” she said in a recording given to the Brazilian press. “Unfortunately, our mission is to be intermediaries in the springboard for the next life,” she said in the same phone call.

“How can a doctor be so evil and regularly kill off so many patients who seek care at a hospital?” a concerned patient at the hospital told YourJewishNews.com.

If prosecutors prove that De Souza killed 300 patients, this could be one of the worst serial killer cases in the world, rivaling the notorious case of Harold Shipman, the English physician who was found to have killed at least 215 patients.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
