(Scroll down for video) A local community was left in shock after a little boy accidentally killed his baby sister with a gun he received last year as his birthday present, according to a statement released by Kentucky police.

“It is one of those crazy accidents,” the local coroner said. The 5-year-old boy of Cumberland County, Kentucky accidentally shot and killed his 2-year-old sister with .22 caliber rifle.

Unlike many such tragedies, the rifle in this case, actually belonged to the child. The weapon, which he received as a gift last year, was unintentionally left loaded with a single round of ammunition in a corner of the family home.

Coroner Gary White said that this type of gun is marketed to young children with the slogan “My first rifle.” He added: “It was a small rifle for the boy. The child was used to shoot the little gun.”

White also said that the children’s mother was at home when the shooting occurred, “She actually was cleaning, and she had been on the porch. She said that no more than three minutes had passed and she heard the rifle going off, and found the girl shot,” White said. The girl was identified by authorities as Caroline Starks.

“I believe that the parents should definitely be charged with negligence in this case. Who leaves ammunition inside a little child’s gun? If any child’s play needs to be supervised it is a loaded gun,” Linda Scott, 44, of Louisville, Kentucky told after learning about the unfortunate death of the baby girl.Mobile video not loading?
