(Scroll down for video)A 44-year-old teacher was arrested after a police officer caught her with her student in her car.
Giovanna Yaranga, of Burlington, Vermont is a Spanish teacher at Burlington High School. She was jailed after she was allegedly caught in the backseat of her car with a student. According to police, an investigation began around 8:00 am, when a patrol officer noticed a car parked suspiciously behind a building.
When the officer approached the vehicle, he found Yaranga sitting in the backseat of her car with a 17-year-old student. Yaranga allegedly told the officer that she was his mentor and she was in the car speaking with him because he was having problems. When asked why she was using the backseat of a car while counseling him, she explained that she “needed the legroom.”
“I don’t understand why a teacher would risk her career going after someone that isn’t of age. She can be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life,” Paul Powel, 36, of Burlington, Vermont told YourJewishNews.com after hearing about the teacher’s misconduct with her student.
As the investigation unfolded, police learned that a relationship had developed between Yaranga and the student over a long period of time. Yaranga, who has taught at the high school for 15 years, led school trips to her native country, Peru. During the trip she often formed friendships with her students.
Last summer, the teenager in question went along on the school trip with Yaranga to her native country, Peru, according to the arrest report. The two had sex on at least 10 occasions during the intimate part of their relationship. Police do not believe that the couple had sex during school hours or on school property.
Yaranga was booked into jail on charges of four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. She pleaded not guilty at her arraignment hearing.
