Not only Jewish prisoners are suing the government for kosher food, according to a petition filed in federal court in the United States.

Muslim prisoners in Florida are asking a court to be allowed to join a federal lawsuit filed on behalf of Jewish prisoners, who are suing the state Department of Corrections to provide them with kosher meals.

A Miami federal judge has scheduled a hearing this week on whether Florida prison officials should be ordered to serve kosher meals to Jewish prisoners who qualify.

Lawyers for a group of Muslim prisoners have said that their clients are denied “halal”, which is food prepared under Islamic law. Muslims said they would accept a kosher menu instead of halal.

Muslim prisoners said they should be treated equally and want to join the Jewish lawsuit, which was filed by the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Florida prison officials announced that they had restarted the kosher meal program, but federal authorities want a court order to ensure the program remains in place in the future.
