A man was arrested and charged with animal abuse related charges after he visited an animal shelter in order to have sex with a pit bull, according to a statement released by Illinois police.

The man was identified by police as a 50-year-old Chicago resident.

Gerardo Perez was accused by police of having sexual conduct with an animal, and theft. Perez was arrested at his home on Friday after he and a group toured the Chicago Animal Care and Control Center last week. A judge set his bail at $80,000

Prosecutors said Perez was found in a cage with a white and gray pit bull by an employee after the suspect entered a restricted area of the facility.

He said he was on his hands and knees on the side of the dog, and it seemed that he had just completed having sex with the animal, prosecutors said.

Perez then made statements regarding his sexual conduct with the dog to other employees at the scene. Perez was charged with burglary for entering a restricted area.
