(Scroll down for video) A man attempted suicide in protest of the IRS he claimed ruined his life, according to eyewitnesses at the scene.

The man started screaming about government corruption and the Internal Revenue Service before taking a knife and cutting his wrists outside the “Today” show in Rockefeller Plaza, New York City.

The television team of “Today” gave several updates on Twitter and addressed the incident during their program. Around 8:00 am, a crew member of the “Today” show said on Twitter: “There was an incident outside the square.”

The man apparently approached fans of the show and said that the IRS “ruined his life.” He shouted over mint tea and showed spectators a lot of documents before throwing them and threatening to cut himself.

He pulled a knife out from his pocket and used the blade to cut his wrists. He was fought to the ground, but produced a second knife to cut his other wrist.
A video captured by a spectator shows the man being approached by police in the square.

NYPD and security of the square restrained him while waiting for emergency medical personnel. The man, about 50-years-old, is expected to recover.

Fans and tourists were surprised by the scene, saying there was blood everywhere. An outdoor segment was canceled due to the incident.

About an hour later, the “Today” show crew said on Twitter: “All are safe in the square thanks to our security team and the NYPD.”Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
