(Scroll down for video) A woman and her daughter were arrested and charged with murder related charges after the poisoning of the woman’s husband and son with anti-freeze, according to police reports in Missouri.
Police said that the two have confessed to fatally poisoning them with antifreeze and trying to kill a third person, during a period of 14 months.
Diane Staudte, 51, of Springfield, was charged Friday with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree assault and one count of armed criminal action. Her daughter, Rachel Staudte, 22, was accused of the same charges Saturday.
Diane Staudte initially told police that her husband, Mark Staudte, 61, had not been feeling well and suffered from seizures before his death. She also said that her son, Shawn Staudte, 26, had been ill with flu-like symptoms before his death.
The county medical examiner initially ruled that Greene’s husband died of natural causes and the son as a result of previous medical problems. However, an anonymous tip led authorities to re-examine the deaths earlier this month after the hospitalization Diane Staudte’s daughter, 24-year-old Sarah Staudte, the statement said.
A detective said that a nurse told him that although Sarah Staudte’s condition was potentially fatal, Diane Staudte had visited a couple of times and did not stay long. The nurse described Diane Staudte’s actions as “inappropriate”, saying she joked and laughed with the hospital staff. The nurse also told the detective that Diane Staudte said she planned to go on her next vacation to Florida regardless of the state of her daughter.
A doctor told the detective that the condition of Sarah Staudte was “very suspicious” and said he suspected that she had been poisoned.
Diane Staudte admitted during questioning to poisoning her family by putting anti-freeze in their soft drinks and Gatorade for several days.
She told the detective that she killed her husband because she hated him and her son because he was worse than a pest. She said she wanted to kill her daughter, Sarah, because she did not work and she had student loans she had to pay.
Her daughter, Rachel Staudte, when confronted with the evidence admitted to taking part in the deaths and assaults.
During a later interview, Diane Staudte admitted that she and Rachel Staudte planned, studied and committed the crimes together.
