Police said that the woman in Spain has been arrested for attempted murder after her newborn baby was rescued by firefighters in the drain hole of a building, the Ministry of the Interior said this week.

The incident occurred Sunday in the neighborhood of Virgen del Carmen in Alicante.
The baby was found with its umbilical cord still attached and is in serious condition with forearm fractures. His injuries were not considered life threatening, and he is expected to make a full recovery.

Police believe the woman gave birth on Friday and tried to get rid of the baby by tossing the boy into a drain hole.
Firefighters were called when a neighbor thought she heard a crying cat.

The neighbor soon realized that the crying sounds were those from a child. Police said that the woman told them she did not want the baby, and that she had no money for an abortion.

This was not the first time that a baby was rescued from a drain. As we reported earlier, a mother told police that she accidentally flushed her newborn baby down the toilet after being detained for questioning, according to a statement released by police in China.

The mother of the Chinese newborn, was present during the rescue attempt, which took rescue workers about two hours to complete, but she did not admit giving birth to the baby until she was confronted by police.

Police in Dushikuaibao became suspicious when they found baby toys and bloodstained toilet paper in the rented room of the 22-year-old woman, in the building where the rescue occurred.
The woman confessed to police when asked to undergo a medical check up.

The woman told police she could not afford an abortion and secretly delivered the child in the toilet. She said she tried to grab the baby, but the baby slipped into the sewer line.

The woman is a high school graduate who works at a restaurant in the province of Zhejiang, Jinhua City. She said she became pregnant after a one-night stand with a man who later refused to take any responsibility. She did not reveal her pregnancy to her parents. She said she wanted to raise her child, but had no idea how to.

Firefighters were called to the apartment building in the area of Jinhua Pujiang to rescue the child, who was trapped in a sewage pipe just below a squat toilet in one of the public toilets in the building.

The baby, who weighed about 5 pounds, had a low heart rate and some minor abrasions to the head and limbs, but was mostly unharmed. The placenta was still attached.
Dushikuaibao police said the mother was present during the rescue and expressed concern about the child.
