A Bible signed by world-famous scientist Albert Einstein sold for a whopping $68,000 at auction in New York, according to a statement released by Bonhams auctions house.
The Bible was part of a fine collection of books and manuscripts sold at Bonhams auction on Tuesday. The Jewish German-born physicist and his wife signed the Bible in 1932 and gifted it to U.S. friend named Harriet Hamilton.
The auction house said Einstein wrote in German an inscription, which said that “the Bible is a great source of wisdom and comfort and should be read frequently.”
The final price of the Bible was much higher than its pre-sale estimate of between $1,500 and $2,500. The final price included the commission for the auction house.
The auction house has not said who bought the Bible.
Einstein formulated the theory of relativity and won the Nobel Prize in Physics. He died in 1955.
