When looking to stay at a hotel, many people check out Tripadvisor.com in order to see user reviews for hotels.

Tripadvisor is a forum where people write reviews about their stay at different hotels.

Hotel Quebec did not like a guest’s review, so they tried to have the guest remove his negative comment, but when the man refused to remove the comment they decided to sue him for damages.

It all began when Laurent Azoulay of Montreal, Canada, booked a two-night stay at the Hotel Quebec in Quebec, which was close to his eight-year-old son’s hockey tournament. He awoke in middle of the night to find bugs biting his legs.

“I not only saw them, I recorded them. I placed them in a glass bottle and brought it down to the lobby in order to show to the staff,” Azoulay said.

The hotel staff tried to accommodate Azoulay, but considering that it was in middle of the night and all the other rooms in the hotel were full, Hotel Quebec offered to move him to a hotel chain nearby for the rest of the night.

However, Azoulay, who had traveled with his son and his hockey teammates, said he did not want wake up the sleeping children, so he remained in his room for the rest of the night.

After returning from Saturday’s hockey game he was moved to a different room. Azoulay made contact with one of the general managers of the hotel, who offered him a discount of $40 for being bitten by bedbugs on the first night, an offer which he described as “insulting”.

Once he got home, Azoulay wrote a negative review on Tripadvisor detailing his experience with Hotel Quebec.
“Beware of bedbugs! If you are looking for a scratch free night’s sleep, stay elsewhere, you will be doing you and your loved ones a favor,” he wrote.

Jaro Hotels, the chain that owns Hotel Quebec, said that since Azoulay posted his comment, they and a handful of other hotels have been flooded with calls and concerns about bedbugs,
which led to a dip in business.

Although the management of Hotel Quebec is not disputing Azoulay’s encounter with bedbugs in his room, they insist it was an isolated incident.

After Azoulay refused to remove his negative comment from Tripadvisor the hotel filed a lawsuit against Azoulay for damages and loss of profit in the amount of $95,000.
