(Scroll down for video) It took parents five hours to take their 10-year-old daughter to the hospital for bleeding after they mistook her gunshot wound for her period, according to police reports in California.

The girl was sleeping at her home in Hayward around 2:00 am on Thursday, when a stray bullet hit her in the behind, Sergeant Mark Ormsby said.

When she woke up in pain and had blood on her underwear, her parents thought she had started her period, police said.

The parents also found no indication that she had been shot when they took her to the bathroom.

Ormsby said that when she woke up to go to school and she was still in pain, her parents inspected her bed. That is when they saw the bullet hole.

The young woman’s doctor told investigators that the entry wound of the bullet was small and could have been easily overlooked if the family thought she was menstruating.

The girl remained hospitalized in stable condition on Friday, Lieutenant Mark Stuart said.

Police do not have a motive for the shooting and no arrests were made.
