A former head of a popular Jewish charity was arrested and charged with theft related charges after he stole millions of dollars from his organization, according to police reports in New York.
New York Police said that William Rapfogel was charged with grand larceny and money laundering.
He was fired by the New York Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty recently, after the organization said it discovered misconduct on their insurance policies.
The group receives millions of dollars in public funds.
After an investigation by the state attorney general of the state and the State Comptroller, charges were filed against Rapfogel.
The 58-year-old has longstanding ties to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver.
His wife, Judy, is the chief of staff of Silver.
