Olga Rivera, 65 of Bronx, New York, was in the wrong place at the wrong time, on the day of her birthday.

Rivera was walking with her longtime boyfriend Ramon Ramirez, 68, of Manhattan, when she was hit.

Just after 1:00 p.m., a taxi emerged from a tunnel under the Metro-North tracks going westbound on East 102nd Street and hit a truck, which was heading south on Park Avenue. As a result of the accident, the truck drove onto the sidewalk where Rivera and Ramirez were standing. Rivera was mowed down.

Ramirez held on to Rivera and cried: “Mi amor! Mi amor!” (my love, my love) as he pleaded with her not to die, certainly not on her birthday.

Rivera, who was a retired factory worker, mother of three adult children and three grandchildren, was celebrating her 65th birthday.

Rivera was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

“This is a nightmare. She was a wonderful person. She was all I had,” her daughter, Vivian Rivera, 45, who is in the U.S. Navy, said.

Witnesses told police that the truck had the green light when the taxi, carrying a mother and her 9-year-old daughter, passed a red light, hitting the truck.

Ramirez jumped out of the way at the last second, but Rivera, who was wheeling a suitcase, did not stand a chance, according to witness Reyna Alvarado.

“The truck struck and pinned the woman against a fence,” Alvarado said.

The mother and daughter riding in the back seat of the taxi, were rushed to the New York Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition.
