(Scroll down for video) An emergency room doctor was sentenced to 35 years behind bars after pleading guilty to raping and killing a pregnant prostitute, according to court proceedings in Ohio.

The victim had decided to turn to prostitution in order to support herself and her two young children.

Defendant Salim Ali, 44, was sentenced in the Delaware County court on Friday afternoon.

When the pregnant woman, Deanna Ballman, disappeared in July 2012, her family said that she had responded to an advertisement on Craigslist for housekeeping.

Instead, investigators determined that the 23-year-old woman had taken to prostitution after moving to Ohio, following a divorce, which left her with no financial means.

Ballman was nine months pregnant at the time of the incident.

The advertisement read: “$200 for a girl in need,” a euphemism for prostitution, Delaware County Assistant Prosecutor Kyle Rohrer said in a court filing last week.

Ballman died of a fatal overdose of heroin, which Salim gave her at his home in an upscale neighborhood in central Ohio.

Her body was found in the back of her car on a rural road a few miles away from Salim’s home.

Salim’s defense attorney claims that Ballman injected herself with heroin.

Salim acknowledged that he had sex with the drugged out woman, and that he dumped her body. However, he only intended to have sex and not harm her or the unborn child.

The court was urged to take Salim’s record of being a doctor into account.
