(Scroll down for video) An elderly woman is spending time behind bars after she forced her granddaughter to hold a Bible over her head, according to court proceedings in Washington.

Olympia Police said that a local grandmother is accused of abusing her 9-year-old granddaughter because she claimed the girl had a demon inside her.

Cynthia Miller looked confused as she appeared before a Thurston County judge during a probable cause hearing on Monday. At one point, Miller tried to tell the judge the charges against him were false.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Miller is accused of abusing the girl over a long period of time, causing her bruises, burns and broken bones. The affidavit said Miller would force the girl to stand in a corner of the family apartment holding a Bible over her head while other members of the family, including other children, screamed in an effort to get rid of the demon.

“The grandmother said that she was a demon child,” neighbor Amanda Gerber said.

Detectives launched an investigation after teachers at an elementary school saw bruises on her. The probable cause affidavit said that the girl had bruises on various areas of her body in various stages of healing. She also appeared to have burns and several old fractures to her arms, legs, fingers and feet.

Miller was jailed in lieu of $40,000 bail.

The 9-year-old victim and two other children living at the apartment, were removed from the home by Child Protective Services of Washington State.
