(Scroll down for video) Teenaers are known for sneaking out of their house at night once their parents are asleep.

For one teenage girl, her antics led her to be shot and killed by her stepfather.

Police identified the victim as Kiana O’Neil, 14, of Colorado. She was a freshman as Vista Ridge High School.

The girl had left the house without her parents’ permission and was sneaking back into their home before 6:00 a.m.

She crawled through a basement window of the home when her stepfather shot her as he mistook her for a burglar.

Police said the girl was struck in the stomach and chest.

The stepfather of Colorado Springs, was identified as Lieutenant Daniel Meade, 29.

Meade served in Iraq, and earned a Bronze Star amongst many other awards during his 10 years of service.

In Colorado, residents are allowed to own guns and fire at intruders as part of the “Make My Day” law instated in 1985.

The 14-year-old girl was the oldest of three children. Her biological father is also in the military.

So far, no charges have been brought against Meade. Police are still investigating the incident.

Police are looking into the stepfather’s intent, and whether his actions were reckless or self defense.
