Columbia professor strips down during lesson to students

Professor Emlyn Hughes
By: Shifra Unger

(Scroll down for video) A professor at the prestigious Columbia University went crazy and stripped down during a lesson to students, according to video uploaded to the internet.

The Columbia University professor tried teaching students about quantum mechanics.
Professor Emlyn Hughes gave students a rare performance Monday, stripping down to his underwear as images of the September 11, 2001 attacks and the Holocaust played on a screen behind him.

Hughes remained in a weird position on the floor as a ninja blindfolded two stuffed animals and impaled one of them with a sword. The whole five-minute parody was published on a website.

Hughes’ students were first encouraged to dance to the music that was playing as he undressed, but then were dismayed when images of the Twin Towers collapsing and Nazi Germany during the war began to roll on the video screen.

"What's going on?" A student asks repeatedly. "I'm very confused," said another.
When Hughes took out a microphone, a student who mistook it for a gun began shouting: "He has a gun," before realizing his mistake.

Hughes addressed the class and suggested that he intended to confuse them to better prepare their brains for the complexity of quantum mechanics.

"In order to learn quantum mechanics, we must delete all the junk in the brain and start again," he said.

British parliament member declares he doesn't recognize the State of Israel

George Galloway storms out during debate
By: David Ross

(Scroll down for video) A British parliament member stormed out during a debate after discovering that a speaker was an Israeli citizen, according to video uploaded to the internet.

George Galloway, a leading minister for the Left Party, stormed off from a debate Wednesday night at the University of Oxford, after discovering that one of his fellow speakers was an Israeli citizen.

Galloway refused to participate in the discussion entitled "Israel must immediately withdraw from the West Bank" once it became clear that his opponent, Oxford student Eylon Levy, was an Israeli.

Galloway, who represents the constituency of North West Bradford, is an advocate of Palestinian rights and a strong critic of Israeli policies, often referring to Israel as an apartheid state.

He had talked for ten minutes in favor of the motion before handing the floor to his opponent, an Oxford student wrote. However, Levy, a third year student of philosophy, politics and economics, was only able to speak for three minutes before being interrupted by Galloway.

"You said 'we'," Galloway said. "Are you an Israeli?" Galloway asked. When Levy said he was from Israel, Galloway stood up, grabbed his coat and as he walked to the door said: "I do not debate with the Israelis. I've been misled. I'm sorry."

He also said that he does not recognize the State of Israel.

By: John Roberts

(Scroll down for video) A boy called police to report his mother after she told him to go to bed but he refused to go to sleep.

The 10-year-old boy from Massachusetts, threatened his mother that he will call the police on her if she made him go to bed.

True to his word, the boy placed a call to the police, but after he dialed 911, the boy had a change of heart and he hung up the phone.

But police policy requires the operator to call back the person who hung up the phone. When the operator called the home the boy’s mother picked up the phone and she explained the situation.

In the video below you can hear the operator speaking with the mother, who explained that her son threatened her that he will call the police if she sent him to bed, to which the mother responded “Go ahead. Call the police,” which he did.

The mother is heard asking her son if he wanted to talk to the police and complain about his bedtime, but the boy didn’t want to come to the phone.
The operator told the woman that she has to send an officer over to evaluate the situation.

The officer who responded to the call, spoke with the boy and explained to him how the system works and when it was appropriate to call 911, according to the report.
No charges were issued.

Shoe shiner makes $200,000 in tips at children’s hospital

Albert Lexie
By: Debbie Gross

(Scroll down for video) The people of the United States are very generous, according to a man who shines shoes at a children’s hospital.
Albert Lexie, has reportedly earned $200,000 in tips alone.

Lexie, charged $5 to shine a pair of shoes at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. He said that most customers give him a $1 tip while others who are in a giving mood give a $2 tip on top of the $5 charge. For Christmas, one generous doctor gave Lexie, a $50 bill.

Lexie has worked as a shoe shiner since 1950. He started working at the children’s hospital in the early 1980s, and he has received more than $200,000 in shoeshine tips since he began working at the hospital.

Amazingly, Lexie does not keep the tips for himself. He donates the tips to the hospital for the Children's Hospital Free Care Fund, which helps parents who cannot afford the costs of medical procedures for their sick children.

According to Dr. Joseph Carcillo, Lexie, has donated more than a third of his salary to Children's Hospital Free Care Fund.

“He can bring in between $500 and $800 dollars a week,” said one of the fund managers.

The people of the United States were generous to him and in turn Lexie was able to be generous to others. Lexie is called a hero by the many people he has helped.

US Postal Service launches clothing line to boost sales

US Postal Service truck
By: John Roberts

(Scroll down for video) In these times, where technology has changed the way of sending mail, the U.S. Postal Service is struggling and trying to stay afloat.

One way of coping with the decreasing amount of mail being sent, was by creating their own “all weather” clothing line, with the main focus on winter gear.
The name they chose for the clothing line is “Rain Heat & Snow,” as their gear will keep you warm in all weather conditions.

The U.S. Postal Service, has partnered with a fashion company in Cleveland, Ohio, as the U.S. Postal Service will receive a percentage of all sales.

The all weather gear will include coats, hats, jackets and shoes. Their clothing will feature sweat absorbing technology. Clothing for women will be released at a later date.

The US Postal Service, requires a boost of revenue after they lost a reported $1.3 billion last year, due to a decline in the volume mail being sent. Consequently, 500 offices were closed and about 9,000 employees were switched to part-time employees without benefits.

Walmart warns: Lower to middle income shoppers continue to struggle

Walmart store
By: Debbie Gross

(Scroll down for video) The world’s largest retailer has warned that the lower to middle income shoppers continue to struggle despite the economy approving somewhat, according to a statement by the company.

Walmart reported on Thursday an 8.6 percent rise in quarterly profit due to a lower tax rate, but gave an outlook that said that lower income shoppers continue to struggle.

Walmart Stores Inc. is one of several companies such as Burger King and jewelry retailer Zale, who have warned that buyers are being harmed by smaller paychecks and deferred tax refunds. Because Walmart accounts for about 10 percent of U.S. retail spending, the company is seen as a benchmark.

While Walmart’s fourth quarter results were promising, their expectations for the near future is not.
Walmart said that while it had a good start to the holiday shopping season in November, the business has been volatile since December.

February, in particular, has been slower than expected, largely due to the decision of the Internal Revenue Service to delay accepting tax returns for eight days, until January 30, because the government had not reached an agreement on the U.S. budget.

US President Barack Obama will have a busy itinerary scheduled during his visit to Jerusalem next month. The Jerusalem Municipality and the Prime Minister’s Office are planning an interesting and memorable visit for the president as well as the hundreds of journalists expected to cover the event.

Jerualem’s Mayor Nir Barkat is spearheading a special public relations campaign for Jerusalem according to Israel’s Ynet News. The journalists visiting the city will get to experience all that the capital of Israel has to offer.

There will be tours available to journalists of the city’s historical sites including the Western Wall tunnels and the City of David. The journalists will also have an opportunity to experience Jerusalem’s nightlife and bars.

In addition, the journalists will visit Jerusalem’s famous Mahane Yehuda market and eat at the market’s unique restaurants. Also planned is a visit to the Israel Museum, where the reporters will get to see a new exhibition about the legendary King Herod, one of the Judea's great builders - famous for the construction of the Western Wall, among other things, two millennia ago.

On a lighter note, the journalists will also see an ice sculpture built in President Obama’s image at Jerusalem’s first ever ice festival that will be held at Jerusalem’s old train station plaza.

The US President’s schedule for Israel looks a little more different.

Code-named “Unbreakable Alliance,” the President’s visit to Israel will begin with a state reception following his landing in Israel on Wednesday, March 20. According to the itinerary released in Israel’s leading newspaper, Yediot Aharonot last week, President Obama will be welcomed by a state reception where he will hear speeches by President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. President Obama himself will also speak.

The President will then fly to Jerusalem directly to President Peres’ residence and visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum and then Mount Herzl, laying wreaths at Herzl’s tomb and Yitzhak Rabin’s tomb.

In the afternoon, the US President will be hosted at the prime minister’s house where discussions will be held about Iran, Syria, the peace process and Jonathan Pollard, followed by a joint press conference.

On Thursday, President Obama will depart for Ramallah and meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. At some point during the day, following a visit to the Israel Museum, examining a model of the Second Temple Period in Jerusalem, and viewing the Dead Sea Scrolls with Netanyahu, the President will also give a public speech to Israelis.

For President Obama’s public address, the Americans have requested at least 1,000 Israelis to be in attendance.

The last day of the president’s visit in Jerusalem will be on Friday, March 22. The president will either breakfast with Prime Minister Netanyahu in his home or at the King David hotel. President Obama will then visit the Iron Dome battery with Netanyahu and meet with soldiers in charge of the battery’s operation.

A farewell ceremony will be held for President Obama at Ben Gurion International airport at 1:00 pm local time. The president will fly out to Jordan to meet with King Abdullah in Jordan.

Jerusalem resident, Ben Avital, a student at David Yellin College in Jerusalem, believes that Obama’s visit to the capital is a strategic one. “I personally don’t feel that Obama is against Israel or a great supporter of Israel. He is expected to visit Israel so that’s why he is doing it,” Avital told Tazpit News Agency.

“I do believe that Obama will stand with Israel on the important issues like Iran,” he added.

Dead body found in Los Angeles hotel water tank

Elisa Lam
By: Eva Fett

(Scroll down for video) A dead woman’s body was found inside a water storage tank on top of a Los Angeles California hotel, according to police reports in California.

British tourist Michael Baugh and his wife said that water was only seeping from the sinks in the Cecil Hotel, for days.
On Tuesday, after a shower, brushing of his teeth and drinking some tap water, he went to the front desk and found out why.

The body of a Canadian woman was discovered at the bottom of one of the four tanks on the roof of the historic hotel. The water in the tanks have been used for water taps by guests to wash and for drinking.

"The moment I found out, I felt a little sick to my stomach, literally, especially after drinking the water," Michael Baugh, 27, said.

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health officials issued a do-not-drink warning on Tuesday while a laboratory analyzes the water, Terrance Powell, director of the department, said. The revelation contradicts earlier police statements that the water has been deemed safe. Test results are expected for Thursday.

Powell said that the water was also used for cooking in the hotel, a cafe in the hotel is closed and has instructed workers to disinfect food before reopening.

The remains of Elisa Lam, 21, were found by a maintenance worker at the 600-room hotel that charges $65 a night after guests complained of low water pressure.
Police detectives were working to determine whether her death was the result of a crime or an accident.
