(Scroll down for video) A man who was relaxing in his bedroom suddenly fell into a sinkhole that opened under his bedroom, according to press reports in Florida.
The large sinkhole opened in the bedroom of a house near Tampa, trapping a 34-year-old inside the rubble.
The house collapsed on Thursday night in the suburb of Brandon. At dawn on Friday, officials of the Hillsborough County Fire Department determined the house had become too unstable to continue rescue efforts.
Listening devices and cameras were placed in the hole, but there had been no contact with the man who disappeared early Friday.
Engineering officials Friday morning returned with more sophisticated monitoring equipment to determine the actual diameter and depth of the sinkhole.
A spokesperson said that the man's brother was trying to get the man out of the sinkhole when sheriff deputies arrived. The first deputy on the scene pulled the brother out of the still collapsing hole. The spokesperson said the brother and the deputy were not injured.
The man who fell into the sinkhole is dead.
Authorities evacuated residents living on both sides of the house.
