$10 tip on $1450 restaurant bill
By: Moses Gold

(Scroll down for video) What would you do with 85 pizza pies? One customer, ordered 85 pizza pies among other items from a restaurant worth $1450. What caused controversy was the tip the customer left behind, according to press reports in the United States.

The customer was called out as being cheap on the internet after leaving a paltry $10 after receiving 85 pies worth a staggering $1453.93.

A friend of the delivery person, published a photo of the receipt on a website, which generated more than 1,900 comments about gratuity, which in this case was less than one percent of the total bill.

"An order of this mass requires a ridiculous amount of extra work for many people," one user said. "The tip should reflect this," the user added.

Others, however, think that the tip was not that bad.
"Good for the customer. What does the delivery person want? A medal or something?" Another user wrote. "Seriously, he received $10. That is not bad at all. It probably only took 15 minutes to do the work," another user wrote.

The delivery person had to make two trips to deliver the huge amount of pizza.
Experts said that the delivery person should have received at least a tip of 10 percent, or about $ 145.

Mike Lynn, associate professor of consumer behavior at the Cornell Hotel School, told a television news station that pizza delivery people should get $2 per pie.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Man gets $15 million after being left 2 years in solitary confinement with no charge

Stephen Slevin before and after
By: Moses Gold

(Scroll down for video) A man was arrested but never charged on suspicion of drunk driving. The man was jailed in solitary confinement for nearly two years, according to court proceedings in New Mexico.

Now, the prisoner from New Mexico who languished for almost two years in solitary confinement has been awarded one of the largest federal civil rights settlements in history.

Stephen Slevin, 59, will receive $15.5 million after Dona Ana County reached an agreement with the former inmate, who was imprisoned in the county detention center from 2005 to 2007 in an arrest for driving while intoxicated.

The agreement, however, is less than the $22 million a jury awarded him initially last year which the county has appealed.
"His mental health has been severely compromised from the time he was in that facility. He is not the same person. No amount of money will bring back what they took from him," Slevin's attorney, Matt Coyte, said.

"It's nice to be able to get some money to improve his life and move on," the attorney added.
Those 22 months was inhuman and a hellish experience for Slevin. His toenails grew so long that they curled around his feet, was denied showers, causing fungi to form on his skin and he developed bedsores.

Prison officials did not allow him to see a dentist, his lawyer said, so Slevin grew so desperate that he extracted a painful tooth on his own.

Slevin, a Virginia resident, was arrested in August 2005 on suspicion of drunk driving. His lawyer said he was depressed at the time and was trying to get out of New Mexico.

But officials simply threw him in solitary confinement and his lawyer said he was never given a hearing before being placed there or allowed to see a judge shortly after his arrest.
Slevin subsequently filed a lawsuit claiming his right to due process was violated.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Thousands of Lego bricks on busy highway
By: John Roberts

A child was devastated after thousands of pieces of Lego suddenly fell out from the car onto a busy U.S. highway, according to photos uploaded to the internet.

The road was filled with tiny bricks as the epic Lego spill on Interstate 79 in West Virginia, on Sunday, resulted in a case of bad traffic and a little sad child.

According to press reports, firefighter Eric McClain took a photo while helping with the cleanup, which was then posted on facebook. The photo showed thousands of tiny Lego bricks scattered on the road, while police and firefighters directed traffic.

There is no need to panic because a Lego truck did not explode. A woman named Tiffany Lantz saw the picture on facebook and offered an explanation:
“The Lego bricks belonged to my 11-year-old son. The bricks were in bags tied to the top of the Durango belt when it became loose. All of the bricks then fell onto the road. It seemed like an eternity, but I tried to recover as much as I could because I have no money to buy him more.”

She then posted a quick follow-up:
“Sorry to anyone who got stuck in traffic.
I have no words on how many pieces Lantz was able to recover.”

Many commenters suggested that she contact Lego as the toy company has a reputation for generosity and good humor when children lose their toys.

An Italian court sentenced the former Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, on Thursday to a year in prison for publishing a transcript of a recording connected to a banking scandal in 2006.

The 76-year-old will not have to serve the jail sentence until after the appeal process is exhausted in accordance with the Italian law. A higher court can still overturn the lower court ruling as well.

It came amid a political deadlock resulting from the elections last week that left no party able to form a government, although Berlusconi's center-right formation emerged as the second strongest in parliament.

Irish TV forced to apologize after TV host calls Israel a cancer

Vincent Browne
By: Sarah Weiss

(Scroll down for video) After a TV host called Israel a cancer Irish TV was forced to apologize to Jews, according to press reports in the United Kingdom.

Irish TV channel TV3 has been ordered to apologize live on air after its employee, Vincent Browne, called Israel a cancer.

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland or BAI, has affirmed a complaint against the well-known TV presenter of the show “tonight with Vincent Browne”, who said last year during a program that Israel was cancer in foreign affairs.

He went on to say that Israel is polarizing the Muslim community against the world and that the creation of Israel was a great injustice as they stole the land from the Muslims.

The BAI found that these comments did not meet the requirements of "reasonable, objective and impartial", and said the remarks were "not challenged by the contributions of the guests of the program."

Defending his remarks shortly after the presentation, Browne said that by calling Israel a cancer, he did not mean for Israel to be removed. It was just an unfortunate use of the word.

"The reality is that the State of Israel was founded by the confiscation of land formerly occupied by the Muslims. Such injustice is at the heart of the conflict.

The petition was filed by Paul Rossiter, who said he found the comments deeply offensive, which he considered anti-Semitic and indefensible coming from a journalist who is supposed to show objectivity. In the video below you can see Vincent Browne calling Israel a cancer during a TV program.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

The Anti-Defamation League or ADL expressed outrage at the most recent attempts to attack Jews at the prestigious college by demonizing Jews and the State of Israel, saying: "This tactic is designed to silence and intimidate the pro-Israel advocates at Harvard and other schools across the country."

"Freedom of expression has a place on campus, but outright hate against Jewish students in the dormitories of Harvard to create tension, isolate students and foster hostility is unacceptable," Robert Trestan of the ADL, said.

Peace legacy of settler Rabbi Menachem Froman lives on after his death

Rabbi Menachem Froman with Muslim leaders
By: Moses Gold

(Scroll down for video) Despite the recent death of popular peace rabbi of the West Bank, his legacy still lives on, according to press reports in Israel.

By Anav Silverman

Tazpit News Agency For

Israeli Orthodox rabbi, settler, poet and peace activist, Rabbi Menachem Froman passed away in his home community of Tekoa in Gush Etzion on Monday evening, March 4. The 68-year-old father of 10 had long been battling cancer.

Rabbi Froman, with his white beard and white garb, was a beloved figure for people across the political spectrum in Israel. He was instrumental in the establishment of Eretz Shalom or Land of Peace movement, which seeks peaceful coexistence between Jewish settlers and Palestinians in Judea and Samaria.

“Rabbi Froman always said that our mission was to make peace between settlers and Palestinians and that peace wasn’t something exclusive to left-wingers,” said Nachum Pachenik, 40, a founder of Land of Peace.

Pachenik, a settler and father of three, lives in a small outpost called Sde Boaz, near the urban settlement of Neve Daniel in the Judean hills. On his way to a meeting with Arab locals near Bethlehem, Pachenik, a poet who served in Israel’s elite Sayeret Matkal commando unit, speaks of his peace movement proudly.

“Eretz Shalom is the only organization in the world that seeks to cement friendship between Palestinians and settlers,” said Pachenik, born in Kiryat Arba near Hebron. “We are involved in the heart of the conflict,” Pachenik told Tazpit News Agency. “I, like Rabbi Froman, believe that the heart of the conflict is the heart of the solution.”

The Land of Peace movement, comprised of settlers from across Judea and Samaria, has conducted numerous joint activities and projects– both social and economic - with Palestinians from the region. The organization has recently initiated the kosher certification of a tehina factory near Nabulus. The Palestinian factory owner can now advertise and sell his products to kosher establishments in Israel, according to Pachenik.

In addition, Land of Peace organizes meetings between settler rabbis, sheikhs, and clergy and holds interfaith prayers for rain during droughts. With the inspiration of Rabbi Froman, the movement also organized a joint soccer match between Palestinians and settlers, and is currently working on establishing a cooperative organic farm.

Rabbi Froman also valued establishing ties with the Palestinian leadership and had personal connections with Yasser Arafat and Hamas spiritual leader, Sheikh Ahmad Yassin. Last summer, Rabbi Froman met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, accompanied by his wife and other settlers including Pachenik.

“Only three months ago, Rabbi Froman hosted an Arab sheikh and a visiting priest at his home in Tekoa,” continued Pachenik. “The three all prayed in Rabbi Froman’s home – this kind of multi-cultural gathering often took place in the rabbi’s house,” explained Pachenik.

For Ziad Sabatin, a 41-year-old Palestinian from Hussan, near Beitar Illit, who is also active with Land of Peace, Rabbi Froman was “a special and courageous man.” “Rabbi Froman spoke the truth, he understood that we had to look to religion as the way to do things,” Sabatin told Tazpit News Agency.

Sabatin met Rabbi Froman four years ago at a protest against the security barrier. He told Tazpit News Agency that he was surprised to meet the settlers and Rabbi Froman at the protest, which had been organized by him.

“I founded a movement called Combatants for Peace, which also had Jewish activists alongside Palestinians. When I met this group of settlers, I was excited. But the Jewish activists from Tel Aviv were against any positive interaction with the settlers – they refused to meet with them,” said Sabatin. “They told me, for the sake of peace, we will never speak with settlers.”

“That’s when I decided it was time to part ways with this organization and try something new. The next day, I met with Rabbi Froman in his home in Tekoa,” recalled Sabatin.
“Everyone says that the problem is with the settlers, but this is not the case,” said Sabatin.

“We are all human beings and I believe it is the religious leaders, from all sides, who are respected by their followers that can achieve the right way to make peace.”
“These settlers want real peace, they want to be our neighbors - to be good neighbors,” Sabatin told Tazpit News Agency.

“Even Abu Mazen who met with our movement, and the governor of Bethlehem, said we must continue in this direction,” Sabatin stated, using the Hebrew expression “Baruch Hashem,” (to thank G-d) in his conclusion.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
