A man has been arrested, charged and convicted of raping his own daughter over a period of seven years, according to court proceedings in Saudi Arabia.

Now, according to an official Saudi Arabian newspaper, the man accused of raping his daughter has been sentenced to receive 2,080 lashes over the course of a term of imprisonment of 13 years.

The court, in the city of Mecca found the man guilty of raping his teenage daughter over a seven year period while under the influence of drugs.

The newspaper also reported this week that the man will receive the lashes in stages throughout his prison sentence. The man's name was not revealed. The Saudi religious police said the girl's uncle tipped them off to the crime.

“The man committed a terrible crime against his own daughter. The girl is lucky to have an uncle who finally stood up for her. If not for her uncle who knows how long this girl may have suffered from her own father in such a terrible way,” Lucas Federman, 41, a child advocate in Paris, France told

However, human rights organizations condemned the sentence. “It is one thing to give a man a long prison sentence, but lashes is a form of torture that should be abolished,” Giles Rutherford, 32, a human rights activist in Berlin, Germany told

Lashes is one of the penalties available to the clerics who serve as judges in Saudi Arabia who issue rulings according to a strict interpretation of Islamic law known as sharia.

However, as hard as it was to kill the dog the father from Florida knew he had to do whatever it takes to save his son’s finger.

Luis Brignoni, 41, went into panic when he discovered the family dog bit off his son’s finger.

The Malamute-wolf swallowed 11-year-old Fernando Brignoni's pinky finger.

Knowing that the dog had swallowed the finger, the father grabbed a gun, ran out to the backyard and shot the dog. The concerned father then cut the dog’s stomach open to retrieve the finger.

“It must have been hard for the father to kill his beloved family dog, but any loving father would do whatever it takes to help his son,” animal lover Steve Dickson, 67, from Miami, Florida told

The father handed the finger over to EMT members who rushed the boy to the hospital. Sadly, inspite of the quick action, the surgeons were unable to reattach the finger, due to extensive nerve damage.

He reportedly had been simply trying to pet the dog when the animal bit him so hard and it would not let the boy go, until the boy’s 13-year-old brother hit the dog in the head with a stick.

After an investigation, the incident has been ruled an accident by the sheriff's office. Fernando is reportedly recovering well, with his friends and family at his hospital bedside.

Palestinian man arrested after being caught smuggling $500,000 worth of gold

Gold bars
By: Ryan Lee Hall

A Palestinian man was arrested and charged with smuggling related charges after he was caught smuggling $500,000 in gold bars at an Indian airport, according to customs officials in India.

The desperate man received only $500 in compensation for his entire smuggling trip.
The Air Intelligence Unit Wednesday intercepted the 23-year-old Palestinian man at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport for allegedly smuggling 10.5 kilos of gold worth $500,000. This is being touted as a major seizure. The previous record seizure by custom officials was 5 kilos of gold.

The accused, Mohammed Al Sher Rana, had taken an early morning flight with Gulf Air from Bahrain. He expected to return to Bahrain within 24 hours after the shipment was delivered, but was arrested outside the airport, customs officials said.

"The man carried no luggage and had entered the country with only a handbag," a customs official said.
During interrogation, the man claimed ignorance and said he did not know "gold smuggling is illegal in India," the officer said.

“This is another case where a crime boss took advantage of a young ignorant man. The Palestinian smuggled $500,000 worth of gold but received only $500 in compensation for his criminal activity. The man faces many years in jail all for just $500 while his sender enjoys the high life,” ABHA AISHWARYA, 49, an airport worker in India told

The gold has been packed in 12 identical rectangular bars. "He is a poor man and is studying engineering. He came to India only to smuggle the gold," the officer said.
"The man was promised a meager $500 for the assignment," the officer said.

Officials said there has been an increase in cases of smuggling gold recently. This is the first time however, that a Palestinian man was caught.

First Jewish novel in the Hindi language released

Sheela Rohekar
By: Ryan Lee Hall

A new book was released in the Hindi language by the only Jew speaking the Hindi language, according to press reports in Israel.

By Dr. Navras Jaat Aafreedi

Tazpit News Agency For

Sheela Rohekar, the only Jewish writer of the Hindi language, has launched her latest novel, Miss Samuel: Ek Yahudi Gatha, which is her first novel to depict the life of her Bene Israel community in India. The official launch took place on March 30, 2013 at the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi (the Academy of Dance and Drama) in Lucknow. The event was organized by the Lucknow Book Club.

This new book is a significant moment in the history of Indian and Jewish literature, as it was fifty-two years ago, in 1961, that the only other Hindi novel portraying the life of India’s smallest religious minority, the Jewish community, was published. The only other Hindi novel portraying the life of Jewish community got published in the form of Meera Mahadevan’s Apna Ghar .

It never occurred to Rohekar before that the Jewish society in India could be of any interest in a nation where people are hardly aware of the existence of Jews, in spite of their presence in the country for possibly two millennia.

Most of the Indians are either ignorant of Jews or know them only through secondary sources and not as a result of any direct contact because of their small numbers in India. She says, “I felt ashamed and embarrassed when I was asked by Professor Heinz Werner Wessler of Uppsala University in Sweden if I had ever written any story or poem or essay or novel with Jewish characters or a Jewish theme in my literary career in Hindi and Gujarati spanning over a period of forty years.

The question “why?” repeatedly kept echoing within me. Was it my apprehension that nobody would be able to understand the concerns and sensibilities of a community as small as mine in this huge sea of humanity? However this question kept troubling me and now my [latest] novel Miss Samuel: Ek Yahudi Gatha has the story of a Jewish family as its theme.”

Rohekar began her literary career in 1968 with the publication of a Hindi story in the prestigious Hindi literary journal Dharmayug and a collection of short-stories. Her first Hindi novel, Dinānt (1977), won the prestigious Yashpal Award, named after the great Hindi writer Yashpal. This followed by her second novel, Tavīz, in 2005. It is the story of the developments that take place once Révā, a Hindu woman, marries Anvar, a Muslim, and the saga of the interreligious and inter-communal relations.

Maybe it was Rohekar’s own interfaith marriage with her Hindu writer husband that inspired her to weave a story around a Hindu-Muslim marriage. Interestingly Rohekar’s only child, her son from her Hindu husband is neither Hindu nor Jewish, but a practicing Buddhist, though Rohekar herself continues to be Jewish.

Talking of her marriage, Rohekar says, “I got married to a Hindu Kayastha (a caste). To tell you honestly I felt scared after the marriage. I was well aware how I would be chastised by society. And that is exactly what happened. The elderly lesser educated women in my husband’s extended family accepted me reluctantly but refused to accept even water or food from my hands.”

The Lucknow Book Club was faced with opposition to their endeavor to organize a function to release the Hindi language’s second novel on Indian Jews. This opposition is a testament to the growing anti-Semitism among a section of the city’s Muslim population, a recent example of which was an anti-Semitic illustration printed in The Lucknow Tribune.

The Lucknow Book Club was determined to organize the book release function in the face of this anti-Semitic opposition and despite the lack of appropriate funds. Nitin Prakash, its Secretary, Dr. Manoj Singh, its President and other members like Shinjini Singh, a Cambridge Scholar and Siddhartha Rastogi, a management studies professor, have been bravely countering the opposition on the social networking site Facebook and elsewhere.

Rohekar’s Miss Samuel: Ek Yahudi Gatha comes across as a much bolder novel than Mahadevan’s Apna Ghar as it also indulges in a critique of the Indian attitudes towards Jews, which Apna Ghar does not, though both novels do acknowledge the absence of anti-Semitism in India.

Maybe it is the twenty years of diplomatic relations between India and Israel and the success of Esther David, the best known Indian Jewish novelist who writes in English, that emboldened Rohekar to write the way she did, unlike Mahadevan who published her Apna Ghar in 1961 at a time when there was neither any other Indian Jewish novelist in any language nor any relations between India and Israel, and it was to remain so for the next three decades.

The author is an Indo-Judaic Studies Scholar and a Muslim-Jewish Relations Activist, employed as an Assistant Professor of History at Gautam Buddha University, Greater NOIDA, India.

Police persecute woman after trying to talk to her senator

Senator Orrin Hatch
By: John Roberts

If you reach out to your senator, police might be looking for you.

Police were called after a woman asked to meet with her Senator to discuss some issues.

Elise Lazar said she was questioned by the police after she called the office of U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch, to ask whether the senator would be in town during spring break.

Lazar called the Salt Lake City office of Senator Hatch, R-Utah, to ask if he would be in town during spring break, and if there was going to be any council meetings.

Lazar told the senator’s clerk that she and friends want to discuss issues with Hatch, but was reluctant to reveal the problems, not wanting Hatch to refuse a meeting.

The group wanted to express their opposition to the Keystone XL pipeline project, according to reports. According to Lazar, the clerk said Hatch would be too busy to meet them.

“Senators are public servants, they are elected by the people to serve the people. It is surprising that they would go to the police and file a complaint against a constituent who did nothing more than try to speak to the senator about a legitimate issue,” Jason Pembroke, 40, from Washington D.C. told

The woman subsequently received a phone call from the U.S. Capitol Police in Washington. She was told that the office of Hatch filed a complaint against her as they felt she could be a suspicious person looking to harm the senator.

The senator’s spokesperson, Heather Barney, said that the clerk was concerned about the lack of Lazar’s clarity on the purpose of her call as she repeatedly asked about senator Hatch’s "comings and goings."

“This guy seems to have a serious problem sleeping around with all these women. It is bad enough that he is running around cheating on his wife, but sexually abusing a child is outrages,” Charles Sanders 43, a resident in Orange County Florida, told

Police ticket man for kissing his girlfriend on the cheek

Kuber Sarup shows his fine for kissing his girlfriend
By: Eva Fett

A man was arrested and charged with public indecency related charges after kissing his girlfriend on the cheek, according to police reports in India.

Now, a year after Mumbai police fined a man for a kiss on the cheek as he sent his girlfriend off, he has been acquitted for lack of evidence.

Kuber Sarup, 26 won the battle in court this week. The incident took place last year.

"I escorted her to Carter Road in Bandra where I dropped her off and before leaving, I kissed her," Sarup, who runs a production house, said.

Although the girl did not care, police, charged him under Section 110 of the Bombay Police Act, for "indecent behavior in public."

"A police officer grabbed me and fined me 1,200 rupees. He then gave me a long speech about morals and how not to behave in public," Sarup said.

The next day, according to procedure, the man appeared in court and pleaded not guilty.
"Three witnesses were examined to prove that he inappropriately touched the girl and kissed her. Nevertheless, the police could not prove the case. The amount of the fine was returned.

“Although this man won the case, the disturbing part is that the charges were dismissed for lack of evidence. Had there been sufficient evidence to prove that this man kissed his girlfriend the fine would have been upheld. This is clearly a human rights violation,” Arnold Van Housen, 61, a human rights activist in Berlin, Germany told

"This case is a stupid waste of time of the court," Sarup said.
Now, he is planning to file a petition in the Bombay High Court that in future, no one is harassed in this way.

Sharia court orders man to be paralyzed as punishment

Saudi King
By: Moses Gold

(Scroll down for video) A court in Saudi Arabia has ordered a man to be paralyzed after being convicted of assault, according to statements by human rights groups.

The London, England based group, Human Rights, said that Ali al-Khawaher, 24, was reported to have spent 10 years in jail waiting to be surgically paralyzed unless his family paid a million Saudi riyals to his alleged victim.

A local Saudi newspaper reported last week that Khawaher had stabbed a childhood friend in the spine during a dispute over 10 years ago, paralyzing him from the waist down.

Saudi Arabia applies the Islamic sharia law, which allows eye-for-eye-punishment for crimes, but allows victims to forgive those facing charges with so called blood money.

"Paralyze someone as punishment for a crime would be torture,” Ann Harrison, Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa officer, said. "That kind of punishment that could be applied is absolutely shocking, even in Saudi Arabia,” she added.

An Arabic language newspaper quoted the 60-year-old mother of Khawaher as saying that her son was just a 14-year-old child at the time of the crime. She said the victim had asked for two million riyals to forgive her son and then reduced the request to 1 million.

"Unfortunately, we do not have even have a tenth of that amount," the mother said.
“What will the victim gain if the suspect is tortured and paralyzed. This definitely falls into the category of cruel and inhuman punishment,” Gina Kole, 41, a human rights activist in the Middle East told

The newspaper also said that an anonymous philanthropist was trying to raise funds to pay the price of the blood money.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Armed gang rapes U.S. woman while forcing boyfriend to watch the attack

The three suspects arrested in the case
By: Moses Gold

(Scroll down for video) A woman was raped by a gang of young men while her boyfriend was tied up and forced to watch the attack while riding a van transporting them to a hotspot for nightlife, according to press reports in Brazil.

The night out around town became a nightmare after the U.S. woman was raped and beaten aboard a public transport van while her French boyfriend was handcuffed, beaten with an iron bar and forced to watch the attack, police said.

The incident raises new questions about safety in Rio, which has earned a reputation for its crackdown on drug violence in preparation to host next year's FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. The city also will host the World Youth Day, a Catholic pilgrimage which will be attended by Pope Francis and is expected to attract about 2 million people.

Three men aged between 20 and 22 have been arrested in connection with the crime, which took place over six hours from midnight on Saturday, police said. The suspects have been charged with at least one similar attack, against a young Brazilian woman who has come forward to say that she was raped by the same men in the van last week, police said.

"The victims described the attack in great detail, especially the sexual violence," a police officer close to the investigation told a television news station. "Just the way they described the events was surprising. The violence and brutality surprised even us who work in security and are accustomed to hear such things," the police officer said.

Braga said the two foreigners who were in Brazil as students, took a public transport van similar to those often used as a faster alternative to city buses.

Within minutes of the ride, the suspects forced the passengers to get out of the van and then raped the female tourist inside the moving vehicle. The woman was also beaten in the face, and the man was handcuffed and beaten, at one point with a metal bar.

The three suspects took turns at the wheel, driving the van, where they went off on a spending spree with the credit cards of the foreigners.

Once they reached the limit of the two cards, spending about $500 in gas stations and convenience stores, the suspects took the pair back to Rio, where the foreigners were staying, and forced the woman to give them another card credit.

“Tourists need to be extremely careful. Tourists who come to Brazil are seeking to have fun around the country but there are dangerous criminals watching their every step in order to strike,” Alfonso Guerrero, 29, a security guard in Brazil told video not loading? Click here to view

The Ohio clinic in a court filing denied the allegations that doctors were negligent and failed to successfully perform the abortion, which led to the birth of her healthy baby daughter.

The Akron Women’s Medical Group along with two physicians admitted that Knight, of Cuyahoga Falls, sought an abortion last year. However, they deny any negligence and are trying to have the case dismissed.

"I think my client absolutely met the standard of care and that this case has no basis to be in litigation," attorney D. Cheryl Atwell, who represents the physicians and the medical group, said on Monday.

“How can a woman sue for having a healthy baby? She should be extremely happy. If she still doesn't want the healthy baby she can just give it up for adoption,” Christina Adelson, 38, who is a guidance counselor in Cleveland, Ohio told

An attorney for the woman claimed that she sought the abortion after doctors claimed her life was in danger by the pregnancy, according to press reports in Ohio.
