The horse meat scandal across Europe continues to widen.

At first, other meats were found to contain horse meat and now horse meat was found to be laced with an illegal and dangerous drug, according to press reports in the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic Veterinary Authority announced that horse meat imported from Poland tested positive for phenylbutazone, a drug given to the horse that is extremely dangerous to humans.

The horse meat from animals treated with this drug was prohibited from being sold in the European Union.
A spokesperson for the Czech Republic veterinary authority said that so far 650 pounds of tainted horse meat was found on store shelves. The spokesperson also said that all horse meat will be tested for the drug.

“After this latest scandal with horse meat consumers will probably stay away from the meat market in general in the near future until the situation clears up,” Ron Dupree, 40, a commodity analyst in the Czech Republic told

In other horse meat related news, Burger King has become the latest company to be involved in the horse meat selling scandal. Their burgers were tested and found to contain horse meat.

For two weeks, Burger King has denied the allegations that their burgers contain horse meat, but now, they have admitted that after further testing, horse meat was found in its burgers, in the United Kingdom.

The fast food chain, which has more than 500 restaurants in the U.K., had given a series of "absolute guarantees” that its products were not involved in the horse meat scandal. However, new testing has revealed that these guarantees were incorrect in a revelation that threatens to destroy the confidence of its customers.

It also raises serious questions about whether the food company, which sells about a million burgers a week, has an idea of what goes into their products.

The contaminated hamburgers were made by the processing company called Silvercrest, which is based in Ireland, and is part of ABP Foods Group.

After one of its suppliers was being investigated for the sale of beef products potentially contaminated by horse meat, Burger King, concluded that none of its products were affected. But two weeks later they announced that their product did in fact contain horse meat.

Burger king, said it has stopped buying its burgers from Silvercrest, as a result, some menu items from Burger King were "temporarily unavailable", the chain said, apologizing to customers for the inconvenience.

"While the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, has stated that this is not a food safety issue, we are deeply concerned by the results of our investigation and apologize to our customers who trust us to serve the highest quality 100 percent beef burgers," Diego Beamonte, Burger King global vice president of quality, said in a statement. “Our supplier has failed us and in turn we have failed you. We are committed to ensuring that this never happens again," he added.

Several other major food retailers allegedly bought meat from Silvercrest.
Earlier this month, the supermarket giant Tesco, has apologized to customers after learning that some of their beef products contained horse meat. Tesco took all affected meat off the shelf and offered a full refund to customers.

(Scroll down for video) A teen was crushed to death after hiding inside a garbage container, according to emergency workers in France.
The French teenager who had been hiding inside the trash bin was crushed in a garbage truck in Luxembourg on Saturday, police said.
Garbage collectors discovered the 17-year-old boy when he yelled while they were emptying the container into the back of the truck early Saturday morning, but by then he was already caught up into his end.
"He screamed, but it was too late," a police spokesperson in Luxembourg said on Monday.
The boy, whose name was not released, died at the scene, in the city of Luxembourg.
Police have opened an investigation.
“Parents need to educate their children to stay away from garbage containers, first of all because they stink and also because it is extremely dangerous, as this story has shown,” Amy Peterson, 21, a mother of a newborn girl in Paris, France told, after reading about the incident.
This is not the first time a man got in trouble inside a garbage container.
Justin Gilpatrick, 27, from Portland Oregon, was drinking at a bar called “Club 205” early one morning.

When he was ready to leave he realized that he was too drunk to drive, so he made a smart decision not to drive home by himself.

Instead he decided to sleep in a dumpster filled with cardboard boxes until he sobered up, but he didn't realize that it was the night the trash was to be picked up.

At 1:00 AM the Waste Management recycling truck arrived to empty the dumpster. Gilpatrick who was sleeping inside was dumped into the truck's recycling compactor along with the cardboard boxes. The driver had no idea the drunken man was trapped in the back of his truck.

The driver compacted the load of recyclables twice with Gilpatrick inside. After a quarter of a mile, the driver stopped the truck when he heard Gilpatrick screaming, said Waste Management spokesperson Jackie Lang. Gilpatrick was bruised but he was not killed since the compactor was still relatively empty.

The driver was shaken up by the sight of a man lying in the back of his garbage truck. The driver took Gilpatrick out of the truck and called emergency services. Around 2:45 AM he was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Sgt. Pete Simpson of the Portland Police Bureau commended Gilpatrick for not driving drunk, “He knew he's too drunk to drive so he decides not to drive, which is a great decision. But it was followed by a really bad decision, going to sleep in a dumpster that gets dumped into a truck," Simpson said.

The Portland Police Bureau does not expect any charges to be filed in this incident.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Samoa to start selling dog meat from killed stray dogs

Stray dogs
By: John Roberts

(Scroll down for video) A pacific state has announced its intention to fight its stray dog problem by selling dog meat from killed stray dogs, according to press reports in the United Kingdom.

The Pacific state of Samoa is considering exporting canned dog meat as well, as a way to deal with stray dogs.
The controversial plan was proposed by the Deputy Minister of the country, Tole'afoa Apulu Fa'afisi, and received strong support from his fellow politicians.

"Instead of spending money on dogs, how about using their flesh for money?" He said. "Put them in cans and export them. Caring for other farm animals are too expensive, so maybe we can grind their meat and sell them as well?" He added.

The proposal was endorsed by the Minister of Finance, Faumuina Tiatia Liuga, who said: "there is no difference between a pig and a dog."

The opposition has rejected the plan for dog meat, saying that stray dogs should be left alone.
“I hope that the government does not approve this new measure. There are other ways that we can deal with stray dogs. We don't’ have to just kill them all. I am sure that there would be people willing to adopt them,” Laura Sanders, 19, a dog lover in Brooklyn, New York told after reading about the new government plan.

However, not everyone agreed. “It just depends on what people are used to. Just like people in the U.S. have no problem with killing pigs for their meat people in Samoa have no problem with killing dogs for their meat, Karolyn Young, 22, of Samoa told

The police minister, Sala Fata Pinati, said it would be "inhumane" to start shooting stray dogs without obtaining a warrant.
"We cannot just walk to the area where there are a lot of stray dogs and start using a gun to shoot them," Pinati said.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Flight attendant Germain Gardea, 38, deceived the two women by being married to both of them without them knowing the other one existed.

Gardea spent weekdays with Jennifer Saldivar and their son in Arlington, Texas, and on the weekends he spent time with Leslie Gardea, in the nearby city of Grapevine, Texas. The flight attendant was married to both women who lived about 20 miles from each other and they knew nothing of each other for over three years.

Gardea created fake online divorce papers and filed Saldivar’s taxes for her as a single woman.

His secret double life came to light when his second wife found him paying bills for his first wife Saldivar, whom she thought was his former wife. She contacted his “former wife” and they were both devastated when they learned the truth, according to local press reports.

“How can a man play women like that? It is just so wrong. Both women loved him, and they believed he was out working as a flight attendant, instead he lived a double life behind their back. It is outright nasty,” Martha McCann, 52, a happily married woman and mother of three from Houston, Texas told

Gardea, lost his job when the scandal broke, and was arrested for bigamy. However, a grand jury decided not to indict him, because it fell outside the statute of limitations.

"He does not deny it," his attorney Robert Bush said. "He apologized to everyone who was hurt, not just because he got caught, he knew it would come to an end, common sense tells you that this can only last for so long," Bush added.

After the scandal broke Gardea divorced his first wife Jennifer Saldivar, who had his son. He was ordered to pay $6,000 in lawyer's fees and child support. The divorce was finalized on Thursday on grounds of adultery. Germain remained married to his second wife Leslie Gardea and is living together with her in Grapevine, Texas.

The imams were sent to France by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior. The imams that made up the delegation were religious leaders from Haifa, Jadeidi, Majd al-Kurum, Jaffa and Rahat.

The visit served as a reciprocal visit to French imams who visited Israel last year, led by the imam of Drancy, Hassen Chalghoumi. He has been active for several years in promoting cooperation between Jews and Muslims, and in promoting the integration of Muslims into French society. Because of their unconventional activities, Chalghoumi receives frequent death threats and is protected by a French police unit for personal safety.

The visit of the imams included meetings with Muslim leaders in Paris, Toulouse and Marseille, a meeting at the Foreign Ministry, a reception at the French National Assembly, and a meeting with leaders of the Jewish communities in several cities. They also met with representatives of Muslim communities and participated in prayer services at mosques around the country.

U.S. State Department: Funding Palestinian groups is not aiding terrorism

Palestinian terrorists showing off their weapons
By: Shifra Unger

(Scroll down for video) The U.S. State Department has stated in court that funding the Palestinian Authority is not in any way funding terror activities, therefore, a lawsuit brought in court to stop U.S. funding of the PA should be dismissed, according to court proceedings in Washington D.C.

The U.S. State Department recently filed a motion to dismiss the claims of a group of Americans who allege that U.S. aid money to the Palestinian Authority (PA) funds terrorism.

The lawsuit, filed by 24 Americans living in Israel last November in the United States District Court for Washington DC, contends that the State Department has ignored congressional safeguards and transparency requirements which govern financial assistance to the PA.

The attorneys for the US government, who have asked the court not to allow the case to continue, claim that the plaintiffs lack standing to bring this civil action and that the case raises "political questions."

To view memo:

To view lawsuit:

"Rather than defend the government's foreign aid policy on its merits and provide proof that it truly knows where taxpayer money to the PA is going, the government's lawyers are trying to dismiss the lawsuit on legal technicalities. They are saying that it is pure speculation that Americans can be injured by terrorism in Israel and that the issue of funding is a foreign policy power reserved to the US President and cannot be reviewed by the courts," explained Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, one of the attorneys for the plaintiffs and director of the Tel Aviv-based Shurat HaDin – Israel Law Center.

The plaintiffs, some of whom are victims of terror themselves, claim that as a result of White House non-compliance with federal regulations, funds have been flowing to terror groups like Hamas. The plaintiffs call on the US government to stop all funds to the Palestinians until the latter "fully comply with federal prohibitions against support for terrorism."

"This lawsuit does not challenge the President and the State Dept's right to conduct foreign policy nor fund the Palestinians. These plaintiffs simply object to the executive branch's funding of the PA without oversight. It is a legitimate objection by two dozen Americans, who are the class of individuals Congress sought to protect through their safeguards. US funds are being utilized by the Palestinians for terrorism which threatens Americans and the plaintiffs will be responding to this motion and asking that the case be allowed to go forward," Darshan-Leitner stressed.

It is estimated that since the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993 the United States State Department, via USAID, has given over $4 billion to Palestinians. During the last four fiscal years, average aid has been roughly $600 million per year. Additionally, the United States gives approximately $200 million to the United Nations body UNRWA, each year, and during the fiscal years 2008 and 2009, UNRWA gave roughly $500 million of their funding to recipients in the West Bank and Gaza.

Under the Palestinian Anti-Terrorism Act, the State Department is required to certify that the Palestinian government is committed to a peace co-existence with Israel before distributing funds, and ensure that no part of funding is used for terrorism.

Shurat HaDin—Israel Law Center is an Israeli based civil rights organization and world leader in combating terrorist organizations through lawsuits litigated in courtrooms around the world. Shurat HaDin seeks to bankrupt the terror groups and grind their criminal activities to a halt.

Large Protest Marks 10,000 Days of Pollard Imprisonment

Tazpit News Agency For

A demonstration for Jonathan Pollard was held on Monday evening (Apr. 9) in front of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, where U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is staying during his visit to Israel.

The event marked 10,000 of Pollard's incarceration in an American prison. The protesters called on Kerry to act for Pollard's release. Pollard's wife, Esther, stated: "We can't comprehend the meaning of 10,000 days in prison. I request that he be showed compassion and mercy. It is impossible to fathom the remorse and soul searching that cuts Jonathan's heart."

There is a rising awareness throughout the Israeli public regarding Pollard's prolonged imprisonment. Tensions grew especially around US President Obama's visit to Israel at the end of March. Hopes were high that he would bring Pollard with him to Israel as a goodwill gesture to the Israeli people, and in honor of the pending Passover holiday.

A few hours before President Obama landed in Israel thousands of people demonstrated in front of the Jerusalem residence of President Shimon Peres, calling on the U.S. president to release Pollard. An online petition calling on Obama to release Pollard was signed by more than 200,000 people and was presented to him by President Peres.

Obama stated he would consider the issue. Freed IDF soldier Gilad Shalit signed the petition and called on everyone to do so as well: "Freedom is a gift and a prerogative… please help save Pollard", he wrote in a Facebook post.

Before Passover, Housing Minister Uri Ariel and Bayit Yehudi MK Ayelet Shaked held a “model Seder” in honor of Pollard, calling on Israelis and Jews all over the world to place an empty chair at the Seder table in honor of Pollard. Shaked, who heads the Knesset lobby for the release of Pollard, said during the event that she was very moved by the support of members of Knesset from across the political spectrum for the cause of Pollard's freedom.

“I believe that Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Peres must look at the people in this room and realize that there is no time to waste, not even a day. The issue of Pollard's freedom is in their hands,” said Shaked. “I also ask that American Jewry do what they can to free Pollard, and for President Obama not to harden his heart and free Jonathan.”Mobile video not loading? A Rock is a Bullet: The Consequences of Palestinian Rock-Throwing

Baby hit by Palestinian rock attack
By: Ryan Lee Hall

(Scroll down for video) Palestinians continue throwing rocks at Jewish cars despite the deadly consequences, according to video uploaded to the internet.

By Anav Silverman

Tazpit News Agency For

For over 25 years, Palestinian rock-throwing has become a part of routine life for Jewish residents living in Judea and Samaria. On the roads to the settlement communities, many of the 300,000 residents living in the scenic region, have experienced some kind of rock attack on their vehicle. While there has been much debate about the political significance of a Palestinian rock thrower by outside media observers and political commentators – for residents impacted by such rock attacks, the rock is simply seen as lethal.

For Ahikam Simantov from Ofra, a community established in 1975 on the main road between Jerusalem and Nablus, a rock thrown at his family’s car forever changed his life 23 years ago. On May 1990, after celebrating Jerusalem Day in the country’s capital, the Simantov family was driving back home to Ofra when rocks began pelting their car along the way. One rock smashed through the car window, hitting Ahikam’s head, who was seven-months-old at the time.

“It was a period when you couldn’t drive home without getting hit [by rocks],” said Edna Simantov, Ahikam’s mother to Tazpit News Agency in an exclusive interview. “My husband’s car had been hit the week before - this was the height of the first intifada - the roads were dangerous and everyone was getting protective shielding for their cars.”

“Ahikam began crying, his head hadn’t opened but it had begun to swell. At home, we washed him and removed all the pieces of shattered glass,” Simantov recalls. There were three other siblings in the car at the time.
Because there were no ambulances available, the Simantovs drove back to Jerusalem that night, and checked Ahikam into a hospital. The baby lost consciousness during the ride.

“There was a lot of internal bleeding and the doctors weren’t sure that Ahikam would even survive,” said his mother.
Ahikam did survive but suffered permanent brain damage as a result of the rock crushing his skull, which later led to heavy epileptic seizures. When medication could no longer control his seizures, Ahikam’s parents began exploring options for surgery.

Although the Simantovs eventually located, with the help of family and friends, the Montreal Neurological Institute, where Ahikam underwent successful surgery at age 16 that stopped the epilepsy attacks, the 23-year-old feels that he got the hard end of the deal.

“I can't read or write, I will never be able to serve in the army, or get my driving license,” Ahikam recounts sadly. “I will always have to depend on others to help me even with something as simple as sending an SMS. There are many days when I think to myself, why me?”

Ahikam’s mother still keeps the rock that changed the trajectory of her son’s life and that of her family. “We always knew that rocks were weapons and we’ve been suffering from this rock for decades,” says Edna, holding the giant rock in her hand. “Because of this, one-third of my son’s brain is missing. He walks with a limp, has back problems, cannot feel with his right hand and suffers from a weaker right side. I take him to physiotherapy three times a week. I had so much hope for him when he was born, there was so much potential.”

“This is an ongoing tragedy not only for Ahikam, but for our entire family,” concludes Edna. Ahikam’s older sister, Yael, 25, adds that “our entire family has lived in the shadow of this rock. My childhood changed, I feel as though I never really had one.”

Despite all this, Ahikam completed his National Service, a year of volunteer work for the state, where he says he gained more confidence taking care of horses, an activity that he continues to do today. He also gives talks and presentations about his life experience to Israeli police, soldiers, and students, which have been well-received.

“I speak to groups about what a rock thrown at you can do to your life. You have to treat a rock like a bullet - there is no difference between the two,” stresses Ahikam. “I share this dark story to make people aware, but not so that they should pity me.”

The Simantovs, whose families originally come from Iran, have been living in Ofra for 35 years and now have grandchildren who also live in the community. “Without my family, I never could have survived this ordeal - my dad, my mom and my siblings have been beyond supportive of me,” says Ahikam.

The only other worry that Ahikam’s mother has is that her son should find love. “I want him to be happy, to find a girlfriend,” she says.

The most recent Palestinian rock-throwing incident that left a child critically injured took place three weeks ago in Samaria near Ariel. Palestinian teens threw rocks at a vehicle driven by 32-year-old mother, Adva Biton, whose three-year-old girl, Adele was critically injured, and her two older sisters, moderately injured, when a stone struck their vehicle in Samaria on Thursday night, March 14. Adele, who is still unconscious, has been fighting for her life in an Israeli hospital for the past three weeks. Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Facebook starts charging users as much as $100 to send a private message

Facebook website
By: Debbie Gross

(Scroll down for video) Facebook is fast becoming anything but a free service these days with all types of charges, including promoting your post to your own followers and now with a new fee to send a private message, according to press reports in the United Kingdom.

Facebook is starting to charge users up to $100 to send messages to people outside their network of friends.

The social networking website will use a sliding fee scale for the private message service.
The amount you pay will depend on your number of followers and how many other users are paying to contact them.

According to the a British newspaper, fans wishing to send messages to Olympic diver Tom Daley could be charged as much as $15, while it will cost $15.25 to contact the author Salman Rushie.
It is believed that by charging users to contact strangers it will stop people from being bombarded with spam messages.

“I don't think that I will continue using facebook after this is implemented. It is becoming more difficult to use this social networking site by the day. I will begin looking elsewhere for connecting with my firends, perhaps Google +,” Pamela Reed, 18, a facebook user in London, England told after reading about the new charges.

A Facebook spokesperson said: "The new system of charging people to send messages was designed to prevent spam, but we recognize that sometimes you may want to hear from people outside your immediate social circle.
We are testing a variety of price points in the U.K. and other countries, in order to establish the optimal rate. Part of this test is to charge higher amounts for public figures, based on the number of followers they have.
This is still a test and these prices are not what the final price me be."Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

(Scroll down for video) A woman was arrested, charged and convicted of murder related charges after she let her newborn freeze to death outside in the cold, according to court proceedings in Illinois.

Now, the northern Illinois woman who admitted leaving her newborn daughter to freeze to death along a rural road in 2004 was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Katie Stockton, 32, faced up to 60 years in prison for the death of the child. The child became known as Baby Crystal among law enforcement after being found at the Rock River Valley. The Winnebago County prosecutors dropped 11 other counts of murder in exchange for her guilty plea in February to one count of first-degree murder.

Before sentencing, Judge John Truitt of Winnebago County allowed testimony about the skeletal remains of two other infants found years later in the trunk of Stockton.

Stockton hid her pregnancy and gave birth to the baby in secret on December 17, 2004. Then she put the baby in a laundry bag and placed it on a dead end street near the house of her parents.
She was questioned in the death of the baby at the time, but denied that she was the mother and refused to provide a DNA sample.

Detectives investigating the death years later gathered the evidence from a cigarette butt discarded by Stockton, and authorities said saliva found on the cigarette butt matched the blood on Crystal Baby’s clothes. Stockton was arrested in 2009 after tests showed she was the baby's mother with a 99.96 percent certainty.

“This woman is even worse than an animal. An animal would not let its offspring freeze to death. I’m glad that she will be locked away for life,” Ashley Nelson, 24, who is a mother of a 1-year-old girl in Chicago, Illinois told after reading about the case.

After her arrest, investigators discovered that her car had been sitting in an impound lot for a year. That's when they found the skeletal remains of two other babies wrapped in a cloth and put it in plastic bags and buried beneath a spare wheel, chain saws and iron bar.

Forensic pathologists were unable to determine if the babies were born dead or alive. No charges have been filed in connection with those remains.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
