Woman miraculously survives after husband stabs her in the mouth with harpoon

Elisangela Borborema Rosa
By: Moses Gold

A woman miraculously survived despite the fact that her husband stabbed her in the mouth with a harpoon, according to a statement released by hospital officials in Brazil.

The woman, 28-years-old, was accidentally shot in the mouth by her husband.
The Health Department of Rio de Janeiro, said in a statement that the woman's husband was cleaning his gun when it fired a harpoon which struck the woman’s cervical spine.

Elisangela Borborema Rosa was rushed to a hospital and underwent emergency surgery after the incident on Monday in the coastal city of Arraial do Cabo.

The statement cites neurosurgeon Allan da Costa as saying that the spear came within 1 centimeter of killing the woman. He said he expects the woman to make a full recovery.

A police officer in Arrial do Cabo, said that authorities are investigating the case.
"Everything indicates that it was an accident, but we are investigating. We do not think the husband tried to kill her," the official said.

"Once the woman fully recovers we plan to ask her questions and get a clearer picture of what happened," the officials added.
“This woman is extremely lucky, as rarely does someone survive such an attack. I hope the woman is smart enough to prohibit her husband from touching guns for the rest of his life,” Robin Gray, 41, of Scottsdale, Arizona told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the woman.

This is not the first time someone who was shot in the head with a harpoon survived. As we reported earlier, A fisherman is lucky to be alive after he accidentally shot himself in the face with a spear.

The Brazilian fisherman who accidentally shot a spear through his face, survived with minimal brain damage, and did not even bother to seek medical attention for more than 10 hours after the incident.

Bruno Barcellos de Souza Coutinho, 34, was cleaning his equipment when the gun suddenly discharged, sending a foot-long spear about six inches into his skull, according to officials at Hospital Santa Teresa.

Instead of rushing to the hospital, Souza Coutinho apparently decided to relax at home and let the wounds heal on its own, which led to his aunt calling the fire department.

Souza Coutinho was completely conscious when he arrived at the hospital, despite having the spear piercing in his left eye, crushing his skull and lodging itself in his brain millimeters away from vital arteries. He underwent emergency surgery on Monday and lost sight in his left eye due to the misfortune.

“This man is extremely fortunate to be alive. Not many people can survive a spear through the head. However, had he not waited 10 hours to seek medical attention, doctors might have been able to save his sight in his left eye. People should learn from this and seek medical attention immediately,” Stephanie Philpis, 56, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the fisherman.

He remains in the intensive care unit of the hospital, and now learned to seek medical attention the next time he manages to survive a near-fatal accident.

Scratch and smell cards cause natural gas leak scare

Scratch and sniff gas card notice
By: Moses Gold

(Scroll down for video) Those awesome scratch and smell cards you get in the mail turned out to be really dangerous after some cards caused a natural gas leak scare, according to a statement released by officials in Montana.

The scratch and sniff cards sent out by energy companies to customers to teach them to recognize the artificial odor added to natural gas turned out to work quite well.

Energy West manager Nick Bohr said that recently, workers threw away several boxes of scratch and sniff cards in Great Falls, after they expired. When the garbage truck picked them up and compressed the load in the garbage truck compactor, Bohr said that is when the scratch cards were all activated which released a strong gas odor.

The resulting odor caused numerous false alarms and evacuations of buildings as the garbage truck traveled through the center of Great Falls on Wednesday morning, leaving the gas smell behind.

“I always love to scratch and smell the perfume samples which companies distribute through the mail and in magazines. I never knew that gas companies distribute such cards as well, and I am surprised that these gas cards never caused gas leak scares in the past,” Emily Peterson, 30, of Phoenix, Arizona told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the gas leak scare.

Bohr said the company apologized for the scare it has caused.

A man and his dog were found dead after being attack by a group of bees, according to a statement released by Arizona police.

An Arizona climber was found dead, hanging from a rope on a cliff overlooking south of Tucson, apparently after being stung by bees to death, police said Wednesday.

Steven Wallace Johnson, 55, a counselor with some 30 years experience of hiking and climbing, headed to the mountains south of Tucson on Friday, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada said.

Johnson was reported missing Monday by co-workers after he did not show up to work. A Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office search and rescue team found his body in the evening, Estrada said. "He had been bitten several times and was hanging there," he said.

"He was climbing the cliff and was about 70 feet high and still had about 80 feet to go, so the man had nowhere to run when he was attacked by a swarm of bees," Estrada said.

He said that Johnson's dog had also been attacked by bees and was found dead nearby.

“It is very sad that the man and his dog were stung to death by bees. I think people who are in compromising positions and vulnerable to bee attacks should always use some type of bee repellent especially in areas that are known for bee attacks,” Crystal Rivera, 19, of Tucson, Arizona told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the deaths.

The Office of the Pima County Medical Examiner was performing an autopsy to determine the cause of death of Johnson and the dog.

Man discovers his runny nose is really leaking brain fluid

Joe Nagy
By: John Roberts

(Scroll down for video) A man was horrified after learning that his constant runny nose was really his brain leaking fluid, according to a statement released by his doctor.

The Arizona man thought he had allergies all year round, because his nose kept running. He was surprised to find out after years of suffering, that his runny nose was actually his brain fluid.

Joe Nagy first noticed his runny nose when he got up to get out of bed.
"This clear liquid dribbled through my nose as tears from my eyes. I was like what is this?" Nagy said.
He added that the symptoms continued to worsen over time.

Nagy tried allergy medications, which did not help. He said he had tissues on hand all the time.
He still remembers the embarrassing moments when he could not reach the tissues in time, like when he was picking up drawings of models of aircraft.

It was embarrassing, Nagy admitted.
Fed up, Nagy went to a specialist, who tested the liquid dripping from his nose. It was discovered that it was actually cerebrospinal fluid.

"I was scared to death, if you want to know the truth," he said.
The membrane surrounding Nagy’s brain had a hole in it, causing the brain to drain fluid.
"You do not really think about it, but our brain is actually just above our noses the whole time," Dr. Peter Nakaji, a neurosurgeon at Barrow Neurological Institute said.

Nagy was willing to undergo brain surgery to correct the leak, but then developed a near-fatal case of meningitis.
Over time, the infection cleared, and he was able to have surgery.

“This is a horrific story sure to give me nightmares. I am glad though that Nagy had his problem corrected after suffering for so many years. He is probably happy just to be alive after the crazy ordeal he had been through,” Billy Stone, 36, of Fort Wayne, Indiana told YourJewishNews.com after learning about Nagy.

“A needle is inserted through the nose and a little glue patch covers the hole. There is no cutting involved,” the doctor said.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Thieves dress up as senior citizens to rob bank

Bank robbers dressed as senior citizens
By: John Roberts

Two thieves came up with a clever idea how to be able to rob the local bank.
A Swiss bank has been robbed at gunpoint by two men who dressed up as senior citizens.

The robbers wore prosthetic senior citizen masks with flat caps and thick-rimmed glasses when they robbed the bank in Grisons, Switzerland.

The two men seemed harmless when limping into the building, but when they got to the teller they pulled out guns and demanded all the money.

After receiving the money, thought to be a considerable amount, they ran out of the door before security guards were able to catch them.

A police spokesperson said: "They looked old, but the masks were obviously identical, they could have been twins granddads. We assume that they probably took the masks off and mixed with the crowd once they fled the bank. They ran so fast that we can categorically rule out that they were actually senior citizens."

“These days, criminals have to come up with creative ways to commit crimes without getting caught. It seems like that these two thieves were clever enough, as so far police were not able to catch them,” Harry Knight, 32, of Indianapolis, Indiana told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the seniors robbing the bank.

When asked why she was using the backseat of a car while counseling him, she explained that she "needed the legroom."

As the investigation unfolded, police learned that a relationship had developed between Yaranga and the student over a long period of time. Culp began working at the school as a substitute in April 2012 and became a full-time employee in August 2013, school officials said.

The teenager also said the teacher held parties for him and his friends where she provided them with marijuana and alcohol.
“Sleeping around with a student has consequences. Most of the time, teachers are jailed after getting caught sleeping with students,” Melissa Anderson, of Spring Branch, Texas told YourJewishNews.com after hearing about the teacher who implicated herself.

"This kind of outrageous, illegal behavior will not be tolerated in this school," Superintendent of Schools Duncan Klussmann said. “Our first priority every day is the safety of all students. Diggers found an exciting item recently while digging in Jerusalem, according to a statement released by the Israel Antiquities Authority.

Archaeologists working in Jerusalem have discovered a 2,000 year old stone mine, along with an iron key and masonry tools dating from the same period, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced Wednesday.

The large first century quarry adjacent to the modern area of Ramat Shlomo, have been active at the time of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, archaeologists say.

Some of the stones were cut from rock more than two meters long. It was likely carried down on an ancient road discovered in the vicinity, to the walled city in the south, where they have been used in the construction of monumental buildings.
Also found at the site was an iron key.

"The key is, and probably was used to open a door about 2,000 years ago, is curved and has teeth. We can only assume that it might have fallen from the pocket of one of the masons,” archaeologist Irina Zilberbod, the excavation director, said in the Israel Antiquities Authority statement.

Archaeologists also found peaks and metal shims used to cut the stones carved from the surrounding rock.
The digging and the excavation at the site is designed to allow the construction of a new road.

Billions of locusts invade southern Israel

Locusts invade Israel
By: Shifra Unger

(Scroll down for video) Israel might not be worried from the weakened Syrian army after its recent attacks in the country, but it faces a massive attack in the southern part of the country from an army of locusts.

Billions of locusts were seen on Monday in several places in southern Israel. Ramat Negev Regional Council said that officials have lost control over the grasshoppers and preventive spraying measures have failed.

The head of Ramat Negev Regional Council asked Agriculture Minister Shmulik Rifman and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to hand over the mission to the army. “It's an agricultural and ecological disaster," he said.
A meeting was held with the appropriate authorities at which proposals were given how to contain the locusts.

The locusts first arrived in Israel in early March. Immediately after the arrival, hundreds of thousands of acres were sprayed, however, these actions did not prevent the grasshoppers from mating. Eggs began hatching two weeks ago, and locusts are spreading throughout southern Israel.

Farmers in the western Negev are concerned about the fate of their crops. Locust swarms threaten all the farms in the area. Within a week, the crickets cold start flying in the area of green farmland and destroy large agricultural production land in the region, mainly potatoes and carrots.

The Ministry of Agriculture began monitoring the locusts and started spraying operations as swarms spread over an area of 1.2 million hectares in the western Negev.

“Just when we all forgot about the locusts with the end of the Passover holiday they suddenly came roaring back. I hope that officials will be able to get rid of the pest quickly and with minimal damage,” Ethel Webb, 40, of Ashdod, Israel told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the locusts.

The Ministry of Agriculture said it currently believes that it will be able to combat the locusts.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

By: Shifra Unger

(Scroll down for video) A woman who purchased an interesting looking hat box, was extremely surprised after finding hundreds of World War Two letters inside the box.

About 15 years ago, Pamela Gilliland bought a box of hats at an estate sale for $1 in Oklahoma. When she decided to open the box a few days ago, she found that it was full of letters from World War Two.

Gilliland, reportedly recently enlisted the help of Doug Eaton, a history buff, to learn more about the letters, all of which were written by Eural Harvill and Robert Harvill, brothers serving in the Army during World War Two.

The 250 letters, many of which are cracked and yellowed, were addressed to the parents of the men, Mr. and Mrs. EH Harvill of Drumright, Oklahoma.

Eaton and Gilliland are trying to locate a family member of the two brothers. The hat box also contained photos, Christmas cards and an insurance policy. One letter refers to a woman named Laura, who was the girlfriend or wife of Eural.

"We have not decided what we want to do when we leave the military," the October 14, 1946, reads. "Sorry if I led you to believe differently," the letter continued.

“It is fascinating to come across such an old find in an old looking but ordinary hat box. It makes buying old stuff at estate sales so much more exciting. I would have never expected to find World War Two letters in a hat box,” Rita Cook, 33, of Aurora, Illinois told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the World War Two letters that were found in the old hat box.

Eaton said that she hopes "she can find a family member that would like to have these letters and keep them."Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Tourists from around the world explain on video what Jerusalem means to them

World tourist in Jerusalem
By: David Ross

(Scroll down for video) Tourists from all over the world explained on video what Jerusalem means to them, according to video uploaded to the internet.

In light of Jerusalem Day, Tazpit News Agency interviewed tourists and residents in the Old City of Jerusalem to hear what the city means to them. Jerusalem Day or Yom Yerushalayim in Hebrew marks the anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem and will be celebrated this year on May 8.

It is important to note the historical background of the city.

During Jordanian rule, Jews were denied access to the Old City and Jewish holy sites such as the Western Wall and Temple Mount, while Christians were granted only limited access. The Jordanians expelled all the Jewish residents of the Jewish Quarter in the Old City and destroyed 58 synagogues and yeshivas. On the Mount of Olives, 38,000 Jewish tombstones were destroyed with some used to build fences and floor latrines as well as to pave roads for the Jordanian army.

Although for three thousand years Jerusalem remained the center of Jewish faith from the time of King David, it was not until the Six Day War that the city for the first time in two thousand years had come under Jewish sovereignty. The Israeli government mandated in 1967 that everyone, regardless of religious affiliation, had the right to visit all holy places within Israel.

Tazpit News Agency interviewed visitors from all across the world visiting in the Old City, including England, Denmark, Argentina, Austria as well as Israeli residents themselves.

“Jerusalem really gets into your soul,” said one visitor from England.

For others, Jerusalem left them speechless. “I have no words,” said a woman from Denmark. “It’s holy and beautiful,” an Austrian couple stated. “It is the backbone of all our history,” said a traveler from Germany.

“I came from Tel Aviv only to walk on the streets – it is so beautiful” explains Simcha, an elderly man from Tel Aviv.

For still others, like the local street cleaner that Tazpit News Agency caught up with near the Hurva Synagogue, Jerusalem is the cleanest city in the world.

Simply put, Jerusalem is a city for everyone. “Jerusalem doesn't care who you are or what your religion or culture is,” said a local Israeli tour guide. “Everybody can enjoy themselves here.”Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Jerusalem Day celebrated with song, Israeli flags and memories

Jews celebrating Jerusalem Day
By: David Ross

(Scroll down for video) Many Jewish people were extremely excited to celebrate Jerusalem Day this year, according to photos and videos uploaded to the internet.

By Anav Silverman

Tazpit News Agency For

“It felt like Messiah had come,” says Avigail Shlesinger, 81, of the day Jerusalem was liberated from the Jordan army 46 years ago.

Shlesinger, who is from a six-generation Jerusalem family, recalls what life was like in the Holy City during the time that the Jordanians were in control from 1948 to 1967. “It was a dangerous era,” she tells Tazpit News Agency. “There were areas in the city like King George Street where barriers had to be built to stop the bullets that Jordanian soldiers would shoot towards us.”

“We felt like we were living under siege. It was dangerous to ride on buses and cars because stray bullets could hit anytime,” Shlesinger continues.

“When Jerusalem became reunited, I remember feeling that a very small city had suddenly become large.”

Shlessinger recalls that her grandfather’s yeshiva, Torat Chaim established by Rabbi Yitzchak Winograd in 1886, was the only yeshiva in the Old City during Jordanian rule that hadn't been burned down. An Arab guard protected the yeshiva and safeguarded 3,000 holy books and the Torah Ark until the yeshiva students returned when the city was reunified under Israel.

Although for three thousand years Jerusalem remained the center of Jewish faith from the time of King David, it was not until the Six Day War that the city for the first time in two thousand years had come under Jewish sovereignty. The Israeli government mandated at that time that everyone, regardless of religious affiliation, has the right to visit all holy places within Israel.

Jerusalem Day or Yom Yerushalayim in Hebrew marks the anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem and will be celebrated this year on May 8.

“We went from darkness to light,” concludes Shlesinger. “Today I appreciate Jerusalem so much – just to be able to walk safely on the streets and to pray at the Kotel anytime I want. My grandchildren carry Israeli flags and march in the Jerusalem Day parades. On Jerusalem Day, we celebrate that this city has been home to eight generations of our family.”

British professor calls for Israel boycott despite using Israeli Intel computer chips

British professor Stephen Hawking
By: David Ross

A British professor was caught red handed with Israeli products after calling for a boycott against Israel, according to a statement released by an International human rights organization.

"Hawking's decision to join the boycott of Israel is quite hypocritical for an individual who prides himself on his own intellectual accomplishment. His whole computer-based communication system runs on a chip designed by Israel's Intel team. I suggest that if he truly wants to pull out of Israel he should also pull out his Intel Core i7 from his tablet" – this according to Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, director of Shurat HaDin – Israel Law Center.

On Wednesday it was revealed that British professor Stephen Hawking decided to support the academic boycott of Israel and pull out of the upcoming Israeli president's conference in Jerusalem. Tourists show off their outrageous ice cream bill
By: Debbie Gross

Several tourist were left burning with anger that the ice cream cones they purchased melted in their hands.

Four British tourists have been stunned after being charged $85 for four ice cream cones, in Rome, Italy.

Roger Bannister, his brother Steve, and their wives Wendy and Joyce, ordered four cones with ice cream at the Antica Roma ice cream shop, where they were on vacation.

Roger, who is a native of Dudley, said: "They did not even say thank you when we paid. I'm not surprised. How can they get away with charging $85 for four cones of ice cream? The cones were three flavors and a couple of cookies, but if you want whipped cream they charged another $5 each."

“This is the most expensive standard ice cream cone I have ever heard about, and I fully understand their anger. Some locals love to take advantage of tourists visiting the area, but unfortunately, these type of incidents leave a bad taste with vacationers causing those tourists to refuse to come back again, thereby hurting the tourist industry in the long run,” Peggy Stewart, 31, of Naperville, Illinois told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the outrageous price for ice cream.

Local councilor Matteo Costantini went to the family to find out how much they had paid and was surprised by the amount, eventually offering to reimburse the family.

He said: “They were just outraged by what they had been asked to pay. It is scandalous and we should not allow this to happen.”

(Scroll down for video) Correct or not, one man is legally the oldest man in the world, according to his British birth certificate.
A birth certificate erroneously listed a man to be 154-years-old.

Chris King, 54, made the discovery a few days ago when he found his birth certificate.

In the legal document, the date clearly indicates that King was born on December 28, 1858, which would make him the oldest man in the world.

With 90 years of pension owed to him according to the birth certificate, King could stand to get a payment of almost $600,000 from the Department for Work and Pensions.

The 54-year-old, who is a security officer, said he found the the incident to be funny and strange.

He joked: "On my next birthday, I'm not sure how I will fit 155 candles on my cake. I could write to the Queen and see if she will send me a letter the next time."

“I feel bad for this man, even though it is a clear error, the birth certificate legally declares him 154-years-old. No man wants to be listed as 154-years-old even though it is not true. I can just imagine the jokes people will crack at King for the rest of his life,” Robin Collins, 20, of Manchester, England told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the alleged world’s oldest man alive.

The DWP said that King should go to his local registry office to correct the obvious error.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Puppy miraculously survives being locked in car for one month

By: Eva Fett

(Scroll down for video) One puppy is lucky to be alive after it was locked inside a car for one month, according to a statement released by an animal shelter.

The animal shelter in Kansas City, Missouri is caring for a puppy that survived in a closed car that was impounded for a month in a city lot.

The 12-week-old puppy, who has been called Kia, apparently survived by eating garbage which was left inside the car. The schnauzer and terrier mix had no access to water.

Toni Fugate, who is a spokesperson for the animal shelter in the city, said that the puppy is dehydrated and malnourished, but was expected to survive.

Records show that the car was towed from the beach last month. An employee saw the dog Monday afternoon and called police, who broke into the car.

“Kia has got to be one lucky miracle dog. I have no idea how the dog survived without any water for a full month. I think that researchers should study this case further in order to learn how someone can survive a month without drinking any water,” Paula Perez, 36, of Kansas City, Missouri told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the dog.

The Kansas City Pet Project is working to find a foster home for Kia. However, the dog will not be available for adoption for some time.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

The boy was seen on video confronting a police officer after the police officer parked his motorized vehicle on the sidewalk, blocking pedestrian traffic.

The young boy’s encounter with the Nevada police officer has become an unexpected viral video hit, since more than 3 million people have seen the video on YouTube.

Jeremy Drew, 12, challenged an unnamed official of the Police Department of Las Vegas who had allegedly illegally parked his motorized bike on the sidewalk before buying a soda.

"Is there any reason for you to park on the sidewalk?" Drew asked the officer. "It's like an emergency or something?" He also asked.
After the agent refused to answer, the boy continued the interrogations.
"Can I see your badge number?"

The officer replied: "Really? Are you a lawyer?"
"No, I just want to see your badge number," Drew answered. "Uh, Can I see your badge number?" The boy insisted.
The officer then rode away without providing his badge number, but not before asking the child to identify himself.
"I am a child," he replied. "I'm Jeremy Drew," he added.

“The boy is lucky that he is too cute. If this was an adult questioning the officer I could easily see this encounter escalating into a violent showdown ending up with an arrest and charges. We need more boys like Drew out there watching over police officers who believe they are above the law,” Norma Mitchell, 36, of Las Vegas, Nevada told YourJewishNews.com after watching the video.
