Woman slaps police officer so she can quit smoking while in jail

Etta Lopez
By: Ryan Lee Hall

(Scroll down for video) A woman was arrested after she slapped an officer across the face in an attempt to be arrested and jailed.

Etta Lopez, 31, of Sacramento, California took an extreme measure in an attempt to quit smoking, she got herself arrested.

According to Deputy Matt Campoy, who was slapped, her reasoning was that in jail she will be forced to be without cigarettes thereby helping her to “quit cold turkey.”

According to police, Lopez sat outside the jail for a long time waiting for an officer to exit the building. According to officer Campoy, the woman purposely blocked his way as he left his shift at the Sacramento County Jail. "Suddenly, she came at me and slapped me in the face. It was totally unprovoked," Deputy Campoy said.

Lopez allegedly admitted she was sitting in front of the county jail for hours with the intention of assaulting an officer to be arrested and put in prison, where she would have to stop smoking cigarettes.

“There are many products to help people stop smoking, such as nicotine patches or gum. She could have gotten support from anti-smoking groups to help her stop smoking. Slapping anyone especially an officer is a bad idea,” Steven Clark, 45, of San Diego, California told YourJewishNews.com after hearing about Lopez’s unique way to quit smoking.

"I have not heard of anything like that before," Kimberly Bankston-Lee with an anti-smoking group called Breathe California said.
Breathe California fights lung disease in all its forms, and works with its communities to promote lung health, according to their website.

Israel and China sign $400 million trade agreement

Netanyahu meets Chinese president
By: Shifra Unger

(Scroll down for video) Israel and China have signed an economic trade agreement, according to a statement released by Israeli government officials.

Israel and China have signed a $400 million trade agreement, extending the financial relations between the two countries. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that about $8 billion in goods and services flow between Israel and China each year. “There is still room for much more growth,” Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu also met with the President of China during his journey which was focused on technology as a key area to develop mutual cooperation. China is a key target market for world-renowned engineers and programmers. Netanyahu participated in a live video chat with millions of Chinese Internet users during which he said that since his last visit 15 years ago he was very impressed by "the development, progress and tremendous growth" of the country.

As we reported earlier, the Israeli prime Minister visited the former Chinese Jewish ghetto which was a safe haven from the Nazi regime during World War Two.

Benjamin Netanyahu has also praised China for its past role as a haven for Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution in a visit to the old Jewish quarter of the city on Tuesday, as questions loom over the future of the area.

Netanyahu, who arrived the day before the start of an official visit to China, visited the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, including the Ohel Moshe synagogue that once served the Jewish community, an official of the museum said.

"Seventy years ago, only Shanghai, China opened the door to provide a sanctuary to Jewish refugees," Netanyahu was quoted as saying.

Since early 1930, tens of thousands of Jewish refugees fled Europe, making Shanghai their new home.
In 1943, the Japanese authorities had occupied Shanghai and ordered some 20,000 Jewish refugees into a "designated area" in the northern Hongkou district, alongside Chinese residents of the city.

Their movements were restricted, but they were never targeted for extermination, despite requests by the leaders of Nazi Germany's ally, Japan, at that time.

"We hope to develop closer cooperation with China, so we can be proud, not only with 70 years ago China but also in the future China," Netanyahu said.

“Its nice to see how the Israeli leader is showing appreciation to the Chinese for their role in helping the Jews during World War Two. I hope that Netanyahu will be able to build extremely close ties between Israel and China, as China is now a global economic powerhouse,” Joan Schmidt, 42, of Flint, Michigan told YourJewishNews.com after watching Netanyahu arriving in China.

The Israeli Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other senior officials in Beijing this week, after a visit by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.

China supports a Palestinian state, but at the same time, Beijing has built trade relations with Israel since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1992.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Marlena Mints
By: John Roberts

(Scroll down for video) A sex-education teacher was arrested after a student bragged about having sex with her.

A student asked her teacher a question about his private parts. The teacher then asked to see it, and proceeded to give the boy oral sex.

Marlena Mints, 31, Cedar Hill, Texas, a health teacher at Bessie Coleman Middle School, has been jailed after she allegedly had sex with at least two students. According to police, an investigation was launched after a teacher at the same high school reportedly overheard a 13-year-old boy boasting about having sex with mints, his sex-education teacher.

As the investigation unfolded, detectives learned that Mints allegedly had sexual contacts with several students. Investigators said the relationship began when the 13-year-old student texted Mints and said he had a problem with his genitals.

Mints allegedly sent a message to the new student, stating that she could help him with his problem, but she would have to take a look in person. The student told investigators that he thought it was fine because Mints was his health and sexual education teacher. When he went to school, he exposed his privates to her, and she allegedly performed oral sex on him.

The student also noted that he and other students in the class were allowed to touch her chest and buttocks. As detectives were investigating the claims of the first student, they learned that Mints also had been exchanging text messages with a 17-year-old student. Mints allegedly picked up the student and took him to her house and performed oral sex on him as well.

“I am very surprised by the allegations. Mints was a good teacher. She taught at the school for seven years. Sounds like she took her job seriously and helped the students by being hands on,” David Torres, 19, of Cedar Hill, Texas told YourJewishNews.com after hearing about the charges against Mints.

Mints was booked into jail on charges of aggravated sexual assault of a minor and two counts of improper relationships with students. Her bail was set at $300,000.

The Georgia high school student was suspended from school after he posted the mugshot on his Instagram page.

Student KeAndre Varner published the photo of his principal, Jamille Miller-Brown. After he posted the photo on the popular social networking site Instagram, one of his followers asked him why the principal has been arrested. So Varner replied: "I think because of a DUI."

When Miller-Brown found out that Varner had posted her photo, she called him into her office and confronted him about the issue. According to Varner, his principal said: “You said I was arrested for DUI?” To which he explained: “I said ‘I think you were arrested for DUI.’”

According to the school, Miller-Brown was arrested for missing a court date for a speeding ticket. After the family went to the media, his suspension was reduced to two days.

New app lets parents know when their baby's diaper gets soiled

TweetPee in action
By: Debbie Gross

(Scroll down for video) Are you constantly checking your baby’s diaper if it is soiled? Stop the madness, because there is an app for that.

Huggies Brazil announced it was testing “TweetPee”, an iPhone app with a clip-on moisture sensor intended to capture when a child's diaper becomes soiled.

A spokesperson for Kimberly-Clark Corp., which owns Huggies, confirmed that “TweetPee” was indeed real, and that it was testing the app out on Huggies Brazil. Currently, the company has signed up four parents, and would expand the number to 10, in the summer.

How does it work? An owl-shaped plastic moisture sensor activates the application, which in turn tweets parents that it's time to change the diaper. The company said the application could help parents track the volume of diapers they use, and know when it's time to reorder.

Considered a concept device, the owl-shaped sensor, or the application is not yet available for purchase.

“This is a wonderful idea. I am always checking my baby’s diaper if it is soiled because I don’t want my baby to develop a rash. My baby does not like to be bothered so much, so now, with this new app, I won’t need to bother my baby. I can’t wait to get my hands on this great app,” Ashley Kim, 34, of Lakewood, New Jersey told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the “TweetPee” app.

Meredith Carroll, mother of a 20-month-old and a 4-year-old, said she had doubts about the usefulness of the “TweetPee” application.

"I'm all about saving time and things that will help you save time," Carroll, 40, said. "But if I cannot go to my supply of diapers, realize that I'm out of diapers and go to my computer to reorder, all on my own, I have a major problem," Carroll added.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Landlord calls police on tenant's tomato plants claiming it is pot

Tomato plant
By: Ryan Lee Hall

If you are a tenant and plan to plant some tomatoes, make sure you let your landlord know about it ahead of time, if not, it might be confused for marijuana plants.

A resident of a Brooklyn, New York apartment building received an unexpected visit from the police after his superintendent called police to report an illegal marijuana growing operation on the roof of the building.

There was only one problem, as the plants growing on the roof of the building were actually tomatoes.

"I do not know much about plants. I'm not very good with that," Christian Delarosa, the building superintendent said. "When I saw them, my first thought was, 'Oh, my God.’ Then, I looked it up on my phone and it seemed to be marijuana plants, but I thought I should call someone who knew about plants, so I called the police," the superintendent also said.

Delarosa called the police and a lieutenant and two officers were sent to the scene to investigate the 15 mysterious pot plants.
An unapologetic Delarosa, 34, said that while the plants were found to be completely legal, he was not the only one fooled.
"When the police arrived they could not tell right away either," he said.
Obviously, the tomato plants do not contain the psychoactive compound found in marijuana plants, but they do contain nicotine.

“Lately, every little thing turns into a major police issue. I feel bad for this tenant having to go through such an ordeal just because the stupid building super thought tomatoes were pot. The tenant should sue the superintendent for emotional distress,” Gloria Harvey, 28, of Brooklyn, New York told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the tomato-pot mix up.

An expert however, said that he is surprised that the police could not tell the difference between marijuana plants and tomato plants. “I find it hard to believe that the police officers who were called to the scene thought for a moment that the tomato plants are marijuana plants. If they did, something is definitely wrong with them,” the expert said.

Fried strips of pork is the secret to living till 105, old woman reveals

Pearl Cantrell eating fried bacon
By: Ryan Lee Hall

(Scroll down for video) If you want to live to at least 105-years-old you got to eat fried strips of bacon every day, at least according to one old woman.

Pearl Cantrell, of Abilene, Texas, attributes her longevity, to thin strips of fried pork.
"I love bacon and I eat it every day," Cantrell said.

The mother of seven children just celebrated her 105th birthday. Her daughter, Anno Cantrell, said her mother still loves to sew and dance, especially country dancing, and two-stepping, even at her age. She gave up mowing the lawn at the age of 100.

Cantrell’s jobs throughout her life included working on fields and waiting tables. She survived her two husbands, and three of her children. The woman claims that bacon helped her survive through hard times.

Because of her love of fried food, Oscar Meyer, a company that sells bacon, gave her several packages of bacon and let her ride in the Weinermobile.

“People should take such claims for what its worth. Just because one woman lived a long life despite eating fried meat her entire life does not mean that anyone eating fried meat every day will live a long life. The opposite is true, as countless studies showed that eating fried and processed meats increases the risk of sudden death,” Teresa Garza, 25, of Houston, Texas told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the old woman who loves fried bacon.

Scientific evidence however, has shown that fried foods are not exactly the keys to longevity. A study presented in February at the International Stroke Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii showed that southerners who eat fried, salty foods more than the rest of the United States are 20 percent more likely to die from a stroke than the rest of the country. Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia are known as the "stroke belt" in the U.S., according to the National Blood, Heart, and Lung Institute.Mobile video not loading? Man wins $60,000 after being told he has a few months to live

Fort Harrison VA Medical Center
By: Eva Fett

A man was told by doctors that he has just a few months to live after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

After hearing the grim diagnosis, the man went out to enjoy what was left of his life, spending his entire life savings in the process. However, months past and the man was still alive and well, as it turned out that he did not have brain cancer. The man filed a lawsuit against the hospital seeking to recover the money he spent.

Now, a judge has ordered the Fort Harrison VA Medical Center to pay about $60,000 to the man who was wrongly diagnosed with brain cancer and told he had only months to live.

U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy ruled that Mark Templin and his family’s suffering was caused by negligence on part of the hospital.

Molloy's decision noted that in the months of which Templin thought he was dying, he quit his job, sold his truck, celebrated his last birthday, bought a prearranged funeral and contemplated suicide. His son-in-law also built a box for his ashes.
It turns out that Templin had suffered several small strokes.

“I can’t imagine the pain this man and his family went through believing that he will die shortly. The judge did the right thing by making the hospital pay for their grave mistake,” Heather Alvarez, 22, of Helena, Montana told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the judge’s ruling.

"It's hard to put a price on the anguish of a man erroneously convinced of his imminent death," Molloy wrote. "Templin lived for 148 days under the mistaken impression that he was dying of metastatic brain cancer," the judge continued.

Alligator attacks criminal while fleeing from Florida police

Bryan Zuniga
By: Eva Fett

(Scroll down for video) Seems like the alligators are now working for the Florida police, helping officers catch fleeing criminals.
Authorities said a Florida man ran from the law and straight into the jaws of a crocodile.

The Sheriff's Office of Pinellas County, said that 20-year-old, Bryan Zuniga was arrested for failure to maintain a single lane Thursday at approximately 2:50 am.

Deputies said Zuniga stopped the car and jumped out of the passenger door. Then broke through a vinyl fence and escaped.

The Tampa Bay area man was found at a local hospital a few hours later. Zuniga told deputies a crocodile attacked him near a water treatment plant in unincorporated St. Petersburg. He was being treated for multiple puncture wounds in the area of the face, arm and armpit.

“Nice work for an alligator. Florida criminals should learn from this that they cannot hide from police in bushy areas because they might get attacked by hungry alligators,” Julie Harvey, 30, of West Palm Beach, Florida told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the alligator attack.

Zuniga has been charged with fleeing police, driving with a suspended or revoked license and resisting arrest without violence.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Spain to open luxury prisons with flat screen TVs and indoor swimming pools

New luxury prison in Spain
By: Eva Fett

If you were wondering what Spain is doing with their recent bailout cash, wonder no more.

Spain announced that it will be building fully equipped luxury prisons for criminals, including flat screen TVs and indoor swimming pools.
The Spanish Interior Minister however, questioned plans for the luxury prisons.

Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz addressed Congress on Wednesday, and questioned the plans for the luxurious San Sebastian prison, located in Basque Country.

"It is not reasonable," he said. "The prison must implement services that help retrain and reintegrate inmates into society, not providing them with hotel type luxury," he added.
The official said the project will soon be completed at a cost of $11 million.

“This is the most outrageous thing I have ever heard. Why are criminals being rewarded for their criminal activity, while law abiding citizens have no money to pay for monthly bills? The government is encouraging people to break the law in order to be able to land in the luxury hotel prison,” Alice Howell, 27, of Madrid, Spain told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the new luxury prisons in Spain.

Joseba Agirretxea, a Basque Nationalist Party lawmaker criticized plans to cut the prison budget from $148 million to $91.7 million.

Big turkey smashes through house window in Massachusetts

Big turkey inside home
By: Moses Gold

A couple would like to get answers as to why a big bird just came smashing through their window in Brookline, Massachusetts.

The couple said in a statement that a turkey ended up in their house by crashing through a double glass window.

Didi Coyle said her husband, Tom Szydlowski, was in the living room of their home around 6:30 pm, along with the family dog when he saw the bird smashing through the window.
Coyle said she was standing in the driveway of the home at the time and witnessed the incident from the outside of the house.

"I was just watching a kind of watching the turkey and realized that it was shooting straight to my house," she said. "It's an old Victorian house, a pink color, so I cannot imagine how it did not see the house," she added.

Coyle said a police officer arrived and was able to convince the turkey to leave the house. She said the turkey seemed to have lost a small amount of blood from the incident.

“This is definitely a bizarre case of bird breaking and entering. Maybe the turkey is blind or it could be that the turkey smelled a delicious dinner which was prepared inside the home and it decided to invite itself,” Ann Howell, 24, of Brookline, Massachusetts told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the turkey that smashed into the home.

"I'm glad no one was hurt, husband, dog and turkey," Coyle said.
