Boulder Colorado wants to be sister city with Nablus where residents support honor killings

Street in Nablus
By: Eva Fett

Many residents are outraged after the city of Boulder, Colorado proposed becoming a sister city with a city where women are murdered in honor killings.

Boulder officials said that residents are divided over a proposal to make the West Bank city of Nablus, its eighth sister city to the city.

Opponents said that Nablus would be an inappropriate Sister City partner because of alleged human rights violations under the Palestinian Authority, including reports of honor killings of women and a perceived lack of respect for press freedoms.

The Anti-Defamation League Regional Director, Scott Levin, said that a group that promotes the sister city relationship is politically motivated, and the city should not take sides in this complex, ongoing international controversy.

Boulder officials said the final decision that will be taken on Monday does not mean that the city supports the political actions of the sister city.

Israeli government declares victory in war against locusts

Israeli spray planes fighting locusts
By: Moses Gold

The Israeli government has announced that it has won the latest war with the locusts.

The Israeli Ministry of Agriculture announced that the plague of locusts in southern Israel was eradicated without much damage to agriculture and farms in the region. The ministry said that after three months, the locusts have disappeared from Israel, and have not spread beyond the western Negev region.

The cost of getting rid of the billions of locusts, including monitoring, spraying, both on land and from the air, and the training of farmers, is estimated at just 7.5 million shekels or about $2 million.

As we reported earlier, a team of Israelis were seen on video battling millions of locusts after a recent locust invasion blanketed Israel with billions of locusts, according to video uploaded to the internet.

Israel might not be worried from the weakened Syrian army after its recent attacks in the country, but it faces a massive attack in the southern part of the country from an army of locusts.

Billions of locusts were seen on Monday in several places in southern Israel. Ramat Negev Regional Council said that officials have lost control over the grasshoppers and preventive spraying measures have failed.

The head of Ramat Negev Regional Council asked Agriculture Minister Shmulik Rifman and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to hand over the mission to the army. “It's an agricultural and ecological disaster," he said.

A meeting was held with the appropriate authorities at which proposals were given how to contain the locusts.

The locusts first arrived in Israel in early March. Immediately after the arrival, hundreds of thousands of acres were sprayed, however, these actions did not prevent the grasshoppers from mating. Eggs began hatching two weeks ago, and locusts are spreading throughout southern Israel.

Farmers in the western Negev are concerned about the fate of their crops. Locust swarms threaten all the farms in the area. Within a week, the crickets cold start flying in the area of green farmland and destroy large agricultural production land in the region, mainly potatoes and carrots.

The Ministry of Agriculture began monitoring the locusts and started spraying operations as swarms spread over an area of 1.2 million hectares in the western Negev.

“Just when we all forgot about the locusts with the end of the Passover holiday they suddenly came roaring back. I hope that officials will be able to get rid of the pest quickly and with minimal damage,” Ethel Webb, 40, of Ashdod, Israel told YourJewishNews.com after learning about the locusts.

The Ministry of Agriculture said it currently believes that it will be able to combat the locusts.

Israeli scientists find marijuana helps prevent brain and heart damage

By: Debbie Gross

Israeli scientists said a study showed that marijuana helps prevent brain and heart damage in animals.

The recently completed study is further evidence that cannabinoids are both neuroprotective and cardioprotective.
The new findings from Israel shows the ability of low doses of THC in preventing brain damage in animals.

Professor Yosef Sarne in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Tel Aviv University said that cannabis has neuroprotective properties. He has found that extremely low doses of THC, the psychoactive component of marijuana, protects the brain from long-term cognitive impairment as a result of injury from lack of oxygen, seizures, or toxic drugs.

Previous studies focused on the injection of high doses of THC in a very short time, about 30 minutes, before or after the injury. Sarne’s findings in Behavioural Brain Research and Experimental Brain Research showed that even very low doses of THC, about 1,000 to 10,000 times lower than that of a conventional joint, administered in a wide window of 1 to 7 days before or 1 to 3 days after injury may trigger biochemical processes that protect brain cells and preserve cognitive function over time.

In the laboratory, researchers injected mice with a single low dose of THC, either before or after exposure to trauma. Another group of mice suffered brain injury, but did not receive treatment with THC. When the mice were examined 3 to 7 weeks after the initial injury, those receiving treatment with THC performed better in behavioral tests that measure learning and memory.

Additional biochemical studies showed increased amounts of neuroprotective chemicals in the treatment group compared to the non treated group.

This treatment, especially in light of the long time frame for the administration and the low dose, could be applicable to many brain injury cases and safer over time, Sarne said.

New Paris museum depicts Palestinian terrorists as heroes

The new exhibit showing terrorists as heroes
By: David Ross

A new museum in Paris was recently opened which depicts Palestinian suicide bombers as heroes.

Now, the Paris museum has drawn outrage from the Jewish community in France over a display showing photos of Palestinian suicide bombers as martyrs.

The exhibition entitled "Death" by Palestinian photographer Ahlam Shibli at the taxpayer-funded Jeu De Paume Museum, is described on the website of the museum as showing "how Palestinian society retains the presence of the 'martyrs'."

According to CRIF, or the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France, the display has what's called "martyrs" of Palestinian terrorist groups, including al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam, and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

In a letter written to French Culture and Communications Minister Aurelie Filipetti, CRIF President Roger Cukierman asked the French government to intervene and remove the display.

"It is particularly unfortunate and unacceptable in the heart of Paris, to display perpetrators of terrorism as heroes," Cukierman said in a statement.

The tiger being treated
By: Sarah Weiss

An Israeli zoo is trying a new approach in order to help an animal suffering from an ear infection.
Veterinarians are trying acupuncture to cure a Sumatran tiger in a zoo in Israel.

The 14-year-old tiger, named Pedang, suffers from a chronic ear infection. On Sunday, a holistic medical professional tried acupuncture, puncturing several pink needles in the ear and other parts of the tiger’s body.

The tiger was sedated during the treatment.
The Zoological Center of Tel Aviv-Ramat Gan said it was the first time using Chinese medicine for an animal. The zoo said other conventional treatments such as antibiotics, failed to cure the infection, which lasted over a year.

Mor Mosinzon, who performed treatments on Pedang, said that acupuncture was designed to strengthen the immune system and open the ear canals, so that the animal’s body can better absorb the antibiotics it receives.

Missouri mother jailed after pet chews off 4-month-old baby’s fingers

Ryan and Carrie Waldo
By: John Roberts

(Scroll down for video) A woman was jailed for child endangerment after her house pet chewed off her baby’s fingers.

Carrie Waldo, 27, and her husband Ryan, of Missouri were arrested after their pet ate their baby’s fingers.

The mother pleaded guilty to second-degree child endangerment after she reportedly left her 4-month-old baby boy unattended with a ferret. The family’s pet chewed off most of the baby's fingers. In a plea deal, the judge ordered her to complete a program of 30-day inpatient drug treatment. If she successfully completes the program, the judge will suspend her one-year prison sentence.

She was also sentenced to two years probation during which she is prohibited to have any contact with her five children. On the day of the attack, Waldo told investigators, she and her husband Ryan Waldo fell asleep in the living room while watching television.

She told police that the baby was in his rocker near the coach and the ferret was roaming free. The ferret got to the infant and chewed off most of the boy’s fingers. Ryan told police he awoke to the baby’s crying, when he discovered what the ferret had done, he caught the animal and threw it against the dishwasher, killing it.

When emergency personnel arrived, the baby had only two thumbs and part of a pinkie finger remaining. Subsequent tests revealed that the ferret had human blood and tissue in its stomach. Investigators claim that neither parent was home at the time of the attack. They believe that the baby was left home alone with the ferret.

The judge admonished the mother stating that she "created a substantial risk" when she allowed the ferret to have access to the baby. He added: "You knew that the ferret had bitten a child in the past." The victim, along with his four siblings were removed from the custody of Waldo and are living with relatives.KCTV5

Man acquitted for murder of prostitute who took his money but refused to perform

Ezekiel Gilbert
By: Eva Fett

(Scroll down for video) A man walked free after he killed a prostitute over $150.

A Texas jury has acquitted a man of murder after he argued he had no intention of killing the woman he just wanted his money back.

Ezekiel Gilbert, 30, defended his action by saying that he was defending his property when the woman would not perform the services she was paid to do, instead she tried to flee with his money.

Gilbert was facing life in prison after he shot Lenora Ivie Frago, 23, who advertised her services as an escort on Craigslist. Frago was shot in the neck, on Christmas Eve 2009. She became paralyzed, and she was hooked up to a respirator for several months until her family pulled the plug.

A Bexar County jury acquitted Gilbert on Wednesday on grounds of a Texas law that allows people to use deadly force to recover property from a nighttime burglary.

Gilbert said that he met Frago on Craigslist. They met at 4:15 am. He paid her $150 for sex, but she took the money and left without giving him anything in return. After she left, Gilbert followed her and saw that she gave the money to her driver, her alleged pimp and they drove off. That’s when Gilbert shot at the car hitting her in the neck.

Prosecutors argued that the Texas law was in place for "law-abiding" citizens, not for people who try to force others into prostitution. Gilbert's defense attorney claimed that he was justified because the woman used "prostitution" as a scam to steal his money, and he had no intention of killing Frago.

After the verdict Gilbert said: "I deeply regret the loss of life of Frago. I've been in a mental prison in the last four years of my life. I have nightmares. If I see guns on television where people are being killed, I change the channel."Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Saudi prince sues Forbes for underestimating his wealth

Prince Alwaleed bin Talal
By: Ryan Lee Hall

(Scroll down for video) A man became angry after Forbes had the nerve to underestimate his wealth, according to a lawsuit filed in the United Kingdom.

The Saudi prince has decided to take legal action against U.S. Forbes financial magazine after it allegedly had the cheek to underestimate his fortune by about $10 billion.

Not many people will be sympathetic to the plight of Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, but that did not stop the wealthy businessman from seeking compensation from Forbes magazine for misrepresenting him on their rich list.

The magazine placed the province at number 26 in the rankings with an estimated fortune of $20 billion, which would have been enough for most of us.

The Middle East mogul was not too happy about this as he thought he was worth at least $30 billion and accused Forbes of being biased against Muslims.

However, the publication stuck to their estimates and said the prince was operating in an "alternate reality" if he thought he was worth a lot more.
This did not go down too well with the billionaire, who decided to launch a defamation lawsuit against the magazine in London.

In order to win the lawsuit, the prince will have to convince the courts that the rich list ranking caused him to lose a serious amount of money or damaged his reputation.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Police officer jailed for life after killing his daughter who was pregnant with his baby

Simo Mgobhozi
By: Sarah Weiss

A police officer was sentenced to life in prison after he raped and impregnated his daughter and then killed her.

Simo Mgobhozi, 41, of Durban, South Africa, who was a 17-year-veteran of the police department, pleaded guilty to rape and murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder and another 15 years for raping his daughter.

The court heard that in June 2011, Mgobhozi, who is a married man, raped his 13-year-old daughter, Nontobeko Zandile Mgobhozi, who he had with a woman who is not his current wife.

The girl did not tell anyone about the rape until she was six months pregnant. At that point, she told her mother that her father raped her and got her pregnant. The mother reported the rape to police. A rape case was opened against Mgobhozi, he was arrested and then freed on bail in January 2012.

The court heard that on March 1, 2012, Mgobhozi broke into the house where the girl lived with her mother, Zinhle Khuzwayo. He demanded to know why they had opened a case of rape against him. When the girl tried to flee from the room, her father proceeded to shoot her. He sprayed the girl with eight bullets, killing her instantly.

The judge said he could not believe that a person, who was responsible for maintaining law and order, had committed such a horrible crime against his own family member. Mgobhozi, who raped, impregnated and brutally murdered his daughter, was called “a beast” by the Scottburgh High Court Judge Gregory Kruger.

At sentencing, Judge Kruger reportedly told the room full people that South Africa was very unfortunate to have someone like Mgobhozi in public service. "The 13-year-old was killed after carrying your child. You could have been a father and grandfather to the child. Shame on you!” The judge said.

After sentencing, Mgobhozi said that the rape happened “in a moment of weakness and sheer stupidity. This accusation of rape of my own daughter caused havoc in my marriage and had a negative impact on the relationships with my immediate and extended family," he said. Now, he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Doctor arrested after spiking her lover’s drink with poison

Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo
By: Moses Gold

(Scroll down for video) A female doctor was arrested and charged with assault related charges after spiking her lover’s drink, according to court proceedings in Texas.

Prosecutors have accused the Houston oncologist of poisoning her lover’s coffee with a sweet tasting chemical used in antifreeze and medical research, causing him serious health problems, including kidney failure.

Ana Maria Gonzalez-Angulo, a breast cancer oncologist at the Texas University of MD Anderson Cancer Center, was charged last week with aggravated assault against Dr. George Blumenschein, a specialist in lung, head and neck cancers in the institution. The two were in a "casual sexual relationship," according to a criminal complaint.

The complaint said that Blumenschein, who joined MD Anderson in 2000, suffered a prolonged loss of use of his kidneys and is still being treated for it. MD Anderson officials did not say if he is back at work.

Gonzalez-Angulo’s lawyer, Derek Hollingsworth, said that his client is "completely innocent."
"She is a distinguished citizen and scientist, and these accusations are totally incompatible with her personal and professional lives," Hollingsworth said in a statement.

Gonzalez-Angulo, who joined MD Anderson in 2003, is free on $50,000 bail.
MD Anderson officials said Gonzalez-Angulo is on paid administrative leave.

Authorities allege that Blumenschein was poisoned on January 27 when he was at the home of Gonzalez-Angulo.
According to the indictment, when Blumenschein complained that his coffee tasted sweet, she told him she had added Splenda.

Within four hours, Blumenschein began experiencing slurred speech, balance problems, and loss of fine motor skills. He was taken to an emergency center, where it was discovered that the doctor was suffering from central nervous system depression, kidney failure and cardiopulmonary complications. Man kills girlfriend after refusing to have an abortion

Carlton Bryan and Matthew Allen Hall-Davis
By: Debbie Gross

(Scroll down for video) A man was arrested and charged with murder related charges after killing his girlfriend because she refused to have an abortion, according to court proceedings in Connecticut.

Shamari Jenkins was pregnant and wanted to settle down, but her boyfriend had other plans, according to court documents released Friday.

Carlton Bryan, 21, who has lived in Windsor and Hartford, was arrested Friday and was charged last night with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, carrying a pistol without a permit and second-degree making a false statement.
Judge Joan Alexander set his bail at $2.5 million.

Matthew Allen Hall-Davis, the alleged gunman, faces similar charges. He is in custody on unrelated theft charges, police said.
Jenkins, 20, was shot in the chest as she sat at the wheel of her Honda Accord, with Bryan in the front passenger seat, in front of 137 Magnolia St. in the North End of the city.

"Carlton Bryan did not want Shamari Jenkins to have the baby," Hall-Davis told police. "Carlton Bryan said that Shamari initially agreed to have an abortion, but changed her mind and was four months pregnant," Hall-Davis told police.
Hall-Davis also told police that Bryan "wanted to stay with his other girlfriend."

Jenkins had planned to name her baby Ja'seon Carlton.
According to the indictment, Bryan lied to the police twice on the circumstances of the death of his girlfriend.

First, he told investigators that he and Jenkins were expecting a cousin to bring him $50 when she was shot. He did not know who was the murderer, police said that Carlton said.

Then he said they were waiting to buy marijuana from two of his friends, but they never appeared. In that interview, he blamed someone with the street name of "Low", whom he had known from prison for the shooting. He chose the photo of the man in a photo array, police said.

But police learned that "Low" had an alibi. They did not get a break in the case until May 20, when a friend assigned to be the lookout told police that Bryan wanted to kill his girlfriend.

Train drivers seen wearing short skirts after being banned from wearing short pants

Stockholm Sweden train driver wearing skirt
By: Sarah Weiss

(Scroll down for video) A group of train drivers found a way to skirt a new rule that prohibited them from wearing short pants by wearing short skirts, according to photos uploaded to the internet.

Male train drivers in Stockholm, Sweden were told they could not wear shorts during the summer, so they decided to wear short skirts in order to circumvent the ban.

When the group of twelve, working in the Roslagsbanan line in Sweden, found out that they would not be able to work in short pants that were a little annoyed.

Instead of putting their pants back on and having to deal with the heat, they decided to wear the female garment, and even showed off their new clothes on Facebook.

“We have always said that when summer comes, we'll get some skirts and wear them,” Martin Akersten, who works on the trains, said.
"It's a very hot climate here, so we'd wear shorts, but if we cannot then we skirts for comfort,” he added.

His new bosses at Arriva had ruled that it would not be appropriate for workers to wear shorts, but curiously did not have a problem with them doing working in skirts.

The company reportedly said that if they would have banned male employees from wearing skirts, then it would have been discriminatory.
Asked how passengers reacted to them with skirts, Akersten said they didn’t seem to mind.

He added: "Passengers were looking at us, but so far no one has said anything, well, not for me, anyway. I do not care as it is more convenient.”Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Tourists seen on video being attacked by wild birds

Birds attacking tourists
By: Shifra Unger

(Scroll down for video) A group of tourists did not end up having a nice outing after being attacked by angry birds, according to video uploaded to the internet.

Most tourists wear sunglasses and straw hats for their summer vacation, but visitors to this remote island would be better off wearing goggles and helmets.

In scenes reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock classic “The Birds”, thousands of birds that nest on the Farne Islands were seen attacking tourists, forcing them to dive for cover.

The birds were pecking us on the head, so to speak, to protect their eggs and also to protect their young, National Trust ranger Will Scott said. They also deposited their waste on the tourists.
However, the attack is not deterring tourists from continuing to visit the island off the coast of Northumberland, in droves.

One visitor said: "I think they are fantastic. I am not afraid, what's the point of being afraid?”
Another said: "Visitors should be prepared and bring a hat. People should not hit birds, they are just protecting their nest.”

Scott said that the birds have a love-hate relationship with humans, and resent the intrusion, however, they are grateful that their presence deter seagulls from trying to steal their eggs from the promenade.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view

Valerie Dodds
By: David Ross

(Scroll down for video) A female teen was arrested and charged with indecent exposure related charges after she recorded herself making out with a cross on the property of a Catholic school, according to police reports in Nebraska.

The young Nebraska woman has been charged for the alleged trespassing on the grounds of her former Catholic school, where she recorded herself making out with a crucifix.

19-year-old Valerie Dodds, also known as Val Midwest, is a former graduate of St. Pius X High School in Lincoln, Nebraska. After graduating, she started an adult photography business. It was then that some of her former Catholic school classmates began saying bad things about her business.

"Everyone in my high school had something nasty to say to me when I started my website, so this is my tribute to all of you," Dodds wrote on her website. Her tribute was to sneak into the school property and show her former classmates an immodest performance.

"I held nothing back," Dodds boasted. "I used my fingers, my toys and even my crucifix. I used everything at school," she said.
Lincoln police apparently did not find her very funny, she was later charged with public nudity and trespassing. The charges did not stop her from continuing with her antics as she went back to St. Pius, this time barely covered in panties and pasties.

A priest at the school said that they are trying to help the teen through prayer and offering forgiveness.
"We are praying for the girl and her family, we are ready to offer forgiveness and support if they should seek it," the priest said.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
