(Scroll down for video) A New Jersey prom queen was brutally murdered after she refused a prom date offer by her alleged boyfriend, according to police reports in New Jersey.
Police immediately suspected her former boyfriend in the murder, but when authorities closed in on him, he fled.
Now, the search for the former boyfriend of the East Orange, New Jersey prom queen found shot to death in her bedroom came to an end when a federal task force captured an 18-year-old man in his Newark apartment, authorities said.
Al-Muqqadin Means faces murder charges in the death of 17-year-old Aquila Flood, a college bound student, who has graduated from school on Saturday.
Flood was recently voted prom queen at Campus High School in East Orange, and was supposed to receive her crown on Thursday night. Now, she will be buried Wednesday morning.
Prosecutors have not offered a motive for the murder, but the victim's mother, Nicole Flood, said that Means was a jilted lover, who began to threaten her daughter after she refused his invitation to the prom.
Means surrendered without incident when members of the FBI cornered him inside a multifamily apartment building on Third Street at 12:30 pm, Anthony Ambrose said.
Nicole Flood found her daughter dead from a gunshot wound to the head. The girl had died hours before the grim discovery. There were no signs of forced entry into the apartment.
Criminal records show that Means was arrested twice this year for theft, burglary and conspiracy. The charges have not been resolved.
