Israelis to consume 15,000 tons of apple during the holiday season

By: Anav Silverman

Israelis will consume around 15,000 tons of apples during the upcoming holiday season, and the locally grown apples are better than ever, according to a report by the Tazpit News Agency.

The apple and honey tradition on Rosh Hashanah has Israelis consuming 15,000 tons of apples during the month of September, an increase of almost 50% from average consumption during the rest of the year.

Israel's crop of apples is of a particularly high quality this year, according to Amos Levin, general manager of the Galilee Development Corporation and chairman of the apple division of Israel's Plants Production and Marketing Board.

Harvested from August through November, this year's apple crop according to Levin has been noted for its excellent size, color and taste. "This summer's relative cooler temperatures, especially at night, helped produce a higher quality of crop," he said.

Nearly all of Israel's apples - about 95% - are grown in the hills of the Galilee and the Golan, as apples require cooler weather to grow best. The apple orchards are located on hills that are 600 meters up or higher and cover 42,000 dunam (10,500 acres).

Over 100,000 tons of apples are sold in Israel each year, with the apple market valued at NIS 700 million annually, serving as the core for the local economy in the Golan Heights. In addition to the local production, about 7,000 tons of apples are imported into Israel from the US and Europe.

While Israel exports little of its apples abroad, this year, the country exported 18,000 tons of apples grown by Druze farmers living in the Golan to Syria, in coordination with the Plants Production and Marketing Board, the IDF and the Red Cross. The Druze apple growers of the Golan have been selling to Syria has for the past eight years but the apple exports were stopped in 2012 when the war situation became too volatile.

This year the apple industry also drew a number of university students from across Israel interested in learning more about agriculture and helping out Golan apple growers.

Sapir college student, Yotam Eyal told Tazpit News Agency that he and his friends have been picking apples for the past month.

“We are college students from all over Israel – from the Negev, Jerusalem, and the north, who are interested in learning more about agriculture and connecting to the land,” Eyal explained. “There are projects that have been initiated in the past year which get students involved in these areas.”

“It’s good to see where a fruit like an apple that you buy in the supermarket comes from,” commented Eyal. “Picking apples all day in the orchard is hard work. But it has made us appreciate dipping the apple in honey that much more this Rosh Hashanah.”

(Scroll down for video) Three people were charged for causing an Israeli military attack after firing rockets at Israel, according to police reports in Lebanon.

A prosecutor in Lebanon said on Monday that three people, two Lebanese and a Palestinian, were charged with the launch of rockets from southern Lebanon into Israel last month.

"Military Court Prosecutor Saqr Saqr arrested and charged two Lebanese, Youssef al-Fleiti and Mohamed Abdul Moula al-Atrash, for the crime of firing rockets into Israel," a Lebanese official said.

A third person, a Palestinian, who remains at large, was also charged with involvement in the attack on August 22, the officials said.

The three fired four rockets into causing damage but no casualties.
Israel fired back at Lebanese targets the next day.

Israeli military officials said that the Israeli army struck targets in the village of Naameh between Tyre and Sidon, about seven miles south of Beirut. The target was a series of tunnels, which were being used for launching rockets.

Protesters chant ‘shoot the Jew’ at South African BDS event

The protest at Wits University
By: Shifra Unger

(Scroll down for video) People are angry and condemned a BDS event after protesters sang “shoot the Jew” outside an Israeli concert.

What was supposed to have been a silent demonstration against a jazz concert outside Wits University, turned ugly when some of the protesters chanted dubula e judah and “Shoot the Jew”, outside the venue.

The protest was organized by BDS-South Africa, an organization that promotes a boycott to anything to do with Israel, either cultural, academic, economic or otherwise.

Instead of condemning this incitement to violence against the Jews of South Africa and to distance the organization from such hate, Muhammad Desai, the BDS-SA Coordinator, has tried to justify it.

“It was just like when people used to chant kill the whites during funerals back in the 1980s,” Desai said.
“The whole idea that this has anything to do with anti-Semitism is crazy,” he also said.

The SA Jewish Board of Deputies condemned this blatant incitement to racial violence against the Jewish community in South Africa.

“It is deeply shocking that the BDS-SA, an organization that seeks to defend human rights, refuses to recognize that they are doing something wrong by spreading hate,” the SA Jewish Board of Deputies said in a statement.

SA Jewish Board of Deputies national President Mary Kluk said that by allowing its members to make such hateful and dangerous statements, BDS-SA had revealed its true colors.

"What this incident proves beyond a doubt that the real agenda of the BDS-SA is not to defend the Palestinian cause, but to incite hatred and possibly even violence against Jews in South Africa," she said.

Palestinians ram stolen truck through Ben Gurion Airport security checkpoint

Two Palestinians were arrested and will be charged after ramming a truck through a security checkpoint at Ben Gurion Airport, according to a report by the Tazpit News Agency.

Early this morning, at about 3:30, a stolen truck driven by two Palestinians from Jenin and Qalkilia ran through the security checkpoint at the entrance to Ben Gurion Airport.

Emergency procedures were immediately set in motion and security forces dispersed throughout the field. The truck continued its rampage through the field, running through more checkpoints and almost running down a security guard, until it was finally stopped by guards who fired four bullets at the vehicle.

The two abandoned the vehicle and began to escape in foot but were finally apprehended. They were stopped only 200 meters away from Terminal 3, one of the airport’s main buildings, which was crowded with outgoing pre-holiday passengers. Some 60,000 passengers have gone through the airport in the last 24 hours.

A police sapper was called in to check if the truck was booby-trapped, but he ruled out that possibility.

During the drama all activity throughout the airport was brought to a stand-still, and was commenced only about an hour later after the all-clear signal was given.

Shmuel Zakai, director of BG Airport, commended the security forces for the quick response, and stated that the guard who fired his weapon was acting properly according to regulations.

The two Palestinians were taken into custody for questioning. They were both in the vicinity illegally without the proper permits. Their motivation is yet unclear. One report indicates they may have stolen the truck with no intent to commit a terrorist attack, and took a wrong turn into the airport.

Lenovo Chief Executive Officer shares his $3 million bonus with low income employees

Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing

(Scroll down for video) Not all CEOs take the money for themselves.

A popular Chinese CEO celebrated his bonus by sharing it with his employees.

For the second consecutive year, Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing, will give away at least $3 million of his bonus to about 10,000 workers in his company.

Employees in 20 countries will share the wealth of Yuanqing with 85 percent in China.
The average payout per employee of $325 is almost equivalent to a month's pay for an employee in China.

A company spokesperson said that most workers receiving the bonus are hourly employees, who are not eligible for other bonus programs.

Yuanqing's generosity may be partly inspired by the record sales of the company this year. In the second quarter, Lenovo topped Hewlett-Packard as the world's number one supplier of personal computers.

Luckily, Yuanqing is not alone in sharing the success of his company with all employees. Lord Wolfson, chief executive of U.K. retailer Next, gave his entire annual bonus of $3.6 million to employees in April. Similarly, last year, technology CEO Markus "Notch" Persson decided to give an extra $3 million to his employees.

Store sells Facebook ice cream with great success

Facebook ice cream
By: Shifra Unger

Many people have tried to profit from Facebook and it seems like some are actually successful.

One ice cream store came up with the idea of creating Facebook ice cream, and it is a big hit.

Brothers Admir and Ibi Adili, run the Valentino ice cream shop in Tisno, Croatia. They recently started offering Facebook ice cream for about $1.35 a pop.

Admir said that he came up with the idea of Facebook ice cream after seeing his 15-year-old daughter, Bibi, spending much of her free time on Facebook.

Realizing that the social media giant Facebook was such a huge part of people’s lives, especially the young, he decided to create a blue and white colored ice cream and named it Facebook. The store began attracting many Facebook fans.

All the brothers had to do was make a plain white ice cream, decorate it with blue syrup and add a sign which read "Facebook" on it. Business started rolling in. Believe it or not, the plan did work out better than they could have imagined.

The treat has been a big hit this summer. Adili said that the Facebook ice cream has been going like crazy.
The Facebook ice cream tastes like chewing gum and candy. But it was not the taste that kept customers coming but rather its name, "Facebook".

When asked if they pay Mark Zuckerberg for the rights to use his trademarked name, the Adili brothers admitted that they have not asked Zuckerberg permission to use the name or the logo of his company for the now famous ice cream. Admir jokingly said "if he calls, I will ask."

(Scroll down for video) A little boy is dead after he was shot while riding in his stroller, according to police reports in New York.

New York City Police said that a 1-year-old Brooklyn boy was killed by a bullet that was meant to hit his father.

Antiq Hennis was riding in a stroller on Sunday night, a few inches away from his parents, when shots began flying through his head, just a block from their Riverdale Avenue home, police and witnesses said.

The child's father, Anthony Hennis, was the intended target, according to police and family members. The father escaped unharmed but distraught after bullets started flying at Bristol Street near Livonia Avenue in Brownsville at 7:20 pm.

The baby was breathing, but his eyes were closed. It's crazy. They just started shooting, a witness said.
At least four shots rang out. The tragic tot was the only person hit.

Antiq was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital with a bullet hole in the left side of the head, police said.

He died in the hospital shortly before 9:00 pm.
"He just started walking. He was vibrant. He was full of life," the child's uncle, Chris Dobson, said. "I cannot believe it," he said.

Detectives believe that the shooting was revenge for an earlier dispute.
Another source said the father ran away from the stroller in order to draw the fire away from his son.

No arrests have been made as of Sunday night, police said.

Man killed after driving into his own booby trap surrounding marijuana plants

Scene of the incident
By: Ryan Lee Hall

(Scroll down for video) A man died after driving into explosives he has put around his marijuana plants, according to police reports in New York.

New York State Police said that a 50-year-old man died on Saturday after he apparently became the victim of booby traps that had been set up to protect marijuana plants on his property.

Sheriff's Department officials on Sunday identified the victim as Daniel R. Ricketts, who owns the property and a home on Saw Mill Road near Thacher Park, the site of the accident.

Ricketts was driving a vehicle in the backyard of his property about 2:30 pm on Saturday when he was almost decapitated after bumping into an almost invisible wire, which was one of the traps he set around four large marijuana plants.

The sheriff said the wire appeared to be the type used in pianos, but said it is not clear what purpose it served as a security measure, besides being dangerous to someone who drives.

Other protections for the plants included barbed wire and leg trap, similar to something used to catch coyotes, the sheriff said. He said alcohol may have been a factor in the incident.

(Scroll down for video) A man was arrested and charged with attempted murder related charges after he allegedly stabbed a taxi driver in order to make off with $200 according to police reports in Pennsylvania.

Philadelphia Police said that Luis Moreno, 21, and another unidentified man, stabbed the driver about a dozen times during a robbery at Front Street and Washington Avenue in the Queen Village neighborhood.

The attack left the driver recovering in a local hospital. While Moreno was arrested another suspect is still at large.

Police said that the driver dropped off the men around 1:15 am near Front Street and Washington Avenue. Police said one of the men stood by the driver's window and was taking money out of his wallet, while the other man pulled out a knife and began stabbing the driver.

At that time the other man also took out a knife and began to attack the driver through the driver's side window.
The driver fought back. He grabbed one of the knives and stabbed the men. At that time the other suspect stabbed the driver in the head. The driver also was wounded in the arm, chest and face in the process, according to investigators.

The suspects fled. The robbers fled with $205.
"Someone saw the 37-year-old driver and called the police. They responded quickly," police Captain Frank Llewellyn said.

Despite being stabbed, the driver was able to give a basic description of his attackers.
Police found Moreno on Fourth and Federal streets. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder, robbery and related offenses. The other man escaped, and police said it is possible he was stabbed in the process of the attack.

The driver was transported to Jefferson University Hospital. He was reported to be in stable condition after suffering superficial wounds.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact the Philadelphia Police.

A woman lost her earring after her pet rooster decided to eat it.

The unlucky woman, whose pet rooster swallowed her diamond earring, will wait until it dies to recover her precious jewelry.

Claire Lennon of Berkshire, United Kingdom, lost her earring to her pet rooster named Sarah. Sarah swallowed her earring while it was sitting on her shoulder.

She will wait eight years to get her hands on the 300 pound gem that her partner Adam, 38, gave her.
A veterinarian said that the earring is trapped inside the stomach of the six-month-old pet.

“The veterinarian said he could retrieve the earring, but the procedure could kill Sarah, and that would be devastating to our six-year-old daughter Mia. So we'll have to wait until Sarah grows old and dies. It is likely that it is doing to take another eight years before I get my earring back," Claire, also 38, said.

"I felt this sudden sharp pain in my earlobe and I realized that Sarah had swallowed up the earring,” she also said.

Pregnant women selling their pregnancy tests on Craigslist

Woman holding pregnancy test illustration
By: Sarah Weiss

(Scroll down for video) There is new craze going around on the web, according to advertisements popping up on Craigslist.

Pregnant women across the United States have taken to Craigslist to sell their positive pregnancy tests for about $25 each.

Some buyers use the tests to finally get their longtime boyfriend to propose, while others use the test to prank their mom or dad. One buyer even used the test to ask for money to get an abortion, and then used it to go on vacation.

"I will provide you with one positive pregnancy test, no questions asked. Test performed on day of delivery," one woman in Florida wrote on Craigslist. "it is none of my business what you choose to use it for!" She added.

Home pregnancy tests work by detecting the pregnancy hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin, which is only present in the urine of pregnant women.

Another woman in Toledo, Ohio, is asking $10 plus the cost of the test. As Florida's announcement, she promises not to ask questions.

"I will not be responsible for the test after it has been sold, and I will not assume any obligations of the test after it has been sold," the Toledo woman wrote. "What is done with the test is your business. I reserve the right to deny any request," she also wrote.

These type of advertisements appear in Chicago, Manhattan, Houston and other cities. Some advertisements have been flagged for removal from Craigslist, but new advertisements keep popping up.

Man deliberately spills hot oil on young girl during robbery, gets life in prison

Leaundrea D. Parker
By: Moses Gold

A man will spend the rest of his life in jail after he spilled hot oil on a young girl so that her mother would give him money.

Leaundrea D. Parker, 29, was convicted of armed robbery, aggravated battery with great bodily harm, aggravated child abuse, aggravated assault and theft.

It all began when one night, a woman and her daughter were greeted by a man with a gun as they were walking home, according to police documents.

Another man was heating cooking oil on the stove in the kitchen, and he forced the woman to put her hand in the hot oil in an attempt to make her reveal where her money was hidden, according to police.

The woman told the robbers that she had no money and that they can take whatever they wanted from the house. That is when Parker threw the hot oil at the 15-year-old girl, burning her back and shoulders.
"He tortured this family to try to find money. It was just horrible," Assistant State Attorney Bill Respess said.

The daughter, who was splashed with hot oil, had to undergo skin graft operations and was hospitalized for four weeks. The mother was treated for burns on her chest and hand, police said.

Parker has a long rap sheet. He was in and out of prison for many different crimes. He got into trouble again when he shot someone. In that case, he was sentenced to jail until 2039. Now, he was sentenced to spend life in prison for the hot oil attack. "He will never leave jail," Respess said.
Another man, Jeremy Williams, was arrested in connection with the robbery. He is still awaiting trial.

Woman arrested after holding down 10-year-old relative so boyfriend can rape her

Celia Montoya and Eugenio Fernandez
By: Ryan Lee Hall

A woman, who was supposed to care for her 10-year-old relative, helped her boyfriend rape the girl.

Celia Montoya, 33, of Colorado, violated the young girl in the worst way. She offered to care for the child for the night, but then she watched as her boyfriend sexually abused the girl.

Montoya was arrested by authorities in Denver, and was charged with sexual assault of a child and child abuse.
She is accused of holding down the 10-year-old while her older boyfriend, Eugenio Fernandez, raped the child.

The attack took place when the girl spent the night at Montoya’s house. The girl had been sleeping in the living room. Something happened during the night that woke up the child. She was frightened, so she got into the bed with Montoya and Fernandez.

Feeling secure, the child fell asleep, but the child was awakened by the feeling of someone touching her private parts.
She realized that her underwear was pulled down. She began to cry and tried to resist by closing her legs.

That is when Montoya held her down and would not let her go away. The rape stopped only when the alleged child rapist got up to go to the bathroom leaving the girl to cry herself to sleep.

The child did not report the assault at that time. At the child’s birthday party where Montoya and her boyfriend showed up, the girl became distressed. Montoya tried to apologize to the victim by saying: "I know you do not like him and you do not feel comfortable around him after that."

That is when the incident came to light. Both were placed under arrest. Montoya’s bond was set at $200,000 and Fernandez is being held in lieu of $100,000.

Quacheena Juett
By: John Roberts

(Scroll down for video) A woman was arrested after she told her daughter to “take care” of another woman who annoyed her.

Instead of being the responsible parent, this mother used her young daughter to take care of her business.

Quacheena Juett, 33, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was jailed after she told her 12-year-old daughter to hit another woman at a gas station because the woman was not moving fast enough.

Police said Juett was parked behind another woman at a gas pump when she started yelling at the woman to hurry up and move her car. When the woman refused to move her car Juett instructed her daughter "to handle it”. The 12-year-old walked over to the victim and punched her in the face.

The victim then went to her car to get her cell phone. However, Juett ran to the car, grabbed the victim's cell phone and fled the scene with her daughter. Fort Lauderdale Police used video surveillance to identify the woman. Then, they used the GPS from the victim's phone to
locate Juett.

When police tracked the phone Juett had already pawned it for cash. Police were able to locate Juett through the sale and she was arrested at her home.

Chanel perfume can be expensive, so one woman seemed to think it would be cheaper to buy a fake disguise in order to swipe the perfume from a store shelf.

However, her disguise was so outrageous that it made international headlines. Police are hoping that someone will recognize the thief under the disguise.
