Israeli doctors restore eyesight to blind people in the Philippines

(Scroll down for video) Several people in the Philippines, who were blind, are able to see again thanks to Israeli doctors currently in that country after a devastating storm left thousands dead and many more injured.

The Israeli medical delegation restored the vision of four people, who were blind due to a medical condition known as surfer's eye.

The IDF Patients Unit spokesperson said that people affected by surfer's eye, also known as pterygium, a growth of pink tissue in the white part of the eye, were treated at the Israeli field hospital.

While there are several options to manage the growth, including surgery, many patients in the Philippines cannot afford treatment.

"Many people have the disease, but those who are poor could not afford the surgery," Israeli Lt. Col. Dr. Erez Tsumi said.

Tsumi, who performed surgeries in the Israeli field hospital, did not have the right tools to operate on the patients, but Reuven Gulfund of the orthopedics department at Hadassah Hospital on Mount Scopus Jerusalem, found a solution.

Gulfund took some medical tools and redesigned them to make them more microscopic, smoother and sharper.

"The local nurse who helped with interpretation was excited and was jumping for joy with the patients after the surgeries restored their eyesight," Gulfund said. “They all thanked us profusely," he said.

In the 11 days since arriving in the Philippines, the IDF team has treated 2,452 patients, 787 of them children, and performed 52 surgeries.

A man is lucky to be alive after being treated by Ichud Hatzalah rescue workers on an Israel to Switzerland flight, according to rescue workers in Israel.

The rescue workers, who had their medical equipment on board, swung into action after a passenger suffered a heart attack.

The incident occurred Sunday morning, on El Al flight 347 from Tel Aviv to Zurich, about an hour and a half before landing.

Yehuda Herzig, a businessman and a volunteer of Ichud Hatzalah, treated the 78-year-old man, who went into cardiac arrest while eating his meal.

In addition to the cardiac arrest the man also choked on his food. Along with another rescue worker who was on the plane, they performed CPR, and after a few minutes they managed to revive the victim.

The captain was ready to make an emergency landing in Sofia, but after his condition stabilized, it was decided to continue the flight as usual. The man was transported to a local hospital after the flight landed in Zurich.

Herzig said that he felt extremely happy after saving the man’s life.

Police said that alcohol may have played a role in the attack.

Teen who robbed woman’s home returns later to rape her as punishment for having him jailed

Curtez Deshawn Graham
By: Ryan Lee Hall

A teen was angry after he spent time in prison for robbery.

When he was released from prison, the suspect went back to the victim’s home and raped her as revenge for calling the police on him and for having him jailed.

Curtez Deshawn Graham, 18, of St. Paul, Minnesota, raped the victim in front of her boyfriend.

He said that the rape was a punishment for the fact that her testimony helped send away him to prison for 14 months.

Graham was on a 10-day furlough and was being monitored by an ankle bracelet, but he removed his ankle monitoring bracelet and headed to the victim’s home.

The woman and her boyfriend awoke as Graham entered their bedroom naked and armed with scissors.

He ordered the boyfriend to tie himself before and he raped the 65-year-old.

Graham was arrested soon after.

Graham pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal sexual conduct, first-degree burglary and kidnapping.

The prosecutor expressed outrage: "Rarely do we see such a completely inhuman crime as this. This man raped the victim in her home in front of her loved one. He earned every day of this lengthy prison sentence.”

Graham was sentenced to 25.5 years in prison.

Doctor uses sex and ‘punishment therapy’ to cure depression in women

David Simon
By: Debbi Gross

(Scroll down for video) A doctor ordered his patients to undress as part of their treatment of depression.

Dr. David Simon of Lake Worth, Florida, is being investigated by the Board of Osteopathic Medicine.

The investigation began after a 38-year-old woman told police that Dr. Simon, who is a married man, told her to come to his office after hours once a month.

At that time, the doctor ordered her to undress and used whips, blindfolds, and other items to “treat” the woman’s depression.

As part of the “punishment therapy,” the doctor would tie her up, blindfolded her and ordered her to perform sexual acts on him.

When police officers raided the doctor’s office they found ropes, wipes, blindfolds and phallic objects, among other items.

Another woman had reported the doctor to authorities, claiming that the doctor touched her back and buttocks after an examination, saying: ”I think you need to be punished for being a bad girl. It seems you really need to be punished.”

“This was a consensual relationship with an adult woman,” Simon's attorney, David Spicer, said.

“However, the Board of Health is clear that doctors can't have a sexual relationship with a patient. That's why we worked out the settlement,”
Spicer added.

Simon’s lawyer had worked out a deal with prosecutors. He was offered two years probation, and a $10,000 fine.

However, the Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine did not agree to the deal as the allegations against the doctor were very serious.

The board has launched its own investigation and will likely strip his license.

Dr. Simon denied that he tortured the patients. He admitted that what he did was “inappropriate” and that it “crossed a boundary.”

The case ruined his reputation and career, he said.

“I can't excuse it. I'm embarrassed for myself, and it has devastated my wife,” Doctor Simon said.

Teenagers force grandma to panhandle and give them the money

Margaret Campbell
By: Shifra Unger

(Scroll down for video) An elderly woman was left humiliated after she was forced to panhandle outside a Walmart.

Police arrested the three teenagers, who forced the woman to beg people for money.

Margaret Campbell, 75, of Texas, was devastated when her own twin grandson’s along with their friend forced her to get out of their car in order to bring them money by panhandling.

Campbell, who lived with the teens in Liberty County, and has helped raise the teens since they were infants, said that they are no longer welcomed to come home after they humiliated her in public.

Joshua and James Cerda, 19, along with their friend, Ashley Ramey, 18, drove the 79-year-old to the Walmart in Porter, to hustle for money to pay for their gas.

Campbell said that she refuse the plan, but the twins were determined.

"Grandma, you’ve got to get me some money. I have no gas,” Joshua Cerda said.

She told the teens to go to work and save their own money, but they refused to listen and forced their grandma to do as they asked.

When they arrived at the Walmart they kicked Campbell out of the car.

Having no choice she started asking people for cash.

A customer flagged down a police officer, who questioned the grandmother.

After hearing her heart-breaking story, the officer found the three lazy teens in a car nearby.

Campbell said that this is not the first time her grandsons have bullied her into panhandling.

All three were arrested and charged with exploitation of the elderly.

Family of armed teenage robber angry after good Samaritan shoots their son

Adric White
By: David Ross

(Scroll down for video) A family is speaking out and is angry after their son was shot while he was holding up a store at gunpoint.

The family members of the robbery suspect in Mobile, Alabama, are lashing out at the good Samaritan, who shot their son and stopped the robbery.

Adric White, 18, was shot five times at about 5:30 p.m., after he held up a Family Dollar Store.

The suspect’s family is furious that their son was shot by a man, who was not in danger and was not the target of the robbery.

A family member told reporters that the good Samaritan should have minded his own business and he should have left the store.

“If no one had a gun up to him, if no one pointed a gun at him what gives him the right to think that it's okay to just shoot someone?” The relative of the armed robber said.

“He should have just left the store and went on to do whatever he needed to do,” she added.

The good Samaritan however, defended his actions by saying that the teen held a gun at the store clerk’s head.

"I pulled my gun on him and said: 'Hey do not move,’” the good Samaritan said.

At that point, the armed robber turned towards a customer so he shot him before the armed robber could shoot.

White was taken to USA Medical Center, where he remains in police custody.

This is not the first time White was arrested for armed robbery. In fact, he is currently out on bail for robbing the Original Oyster House at gunpoint a little over a month before he robbed the Family Dollar Store.

His accomplice, Tavoris Moss, 19, was also arrested in the theft of the Family Dollar Store.

Police said that the good Samaritan who opened fire was justified and no law was broken.

Man cuts off his breast after growing to B cup size

Farshad Hashemzadeh before and after
By: Ryan Lee Hall

(Scroll down for video) A teen was devastated after he developed breasts.

While one was normal in size his second breast kept growing until it was a B cup size.

Farshad Hashemzadeh of the United Kingdom, was 18-years-old when his breast started growing larger than normal.

Hashemzadeh, who is now 28-years-old, said he was so distressed by the growing breast that he tried to cut it off by himself after being denied surgery by the National Health Service (NHS).

“I tried to cut it away, it was painful and there was blood all over the floor,” he said.

Hashemzadeh suffered low self confidence, and he was embarrassed with his body leaving him unable to have a relationship.

"I put on two or three tops to hide the breast,” Hashemzadeh said.

His condition, although rare, is not unique. About 400 men are diagnosed each year with gynecomastia.

The condition, which is caused by a hormonal imbalance and is most common in men over 50-years-old, rarely manifests itself in such an extreme way.

In adolescence, it can also be a side effect of certain medications.

When Hashemzadeh met his current girlfriend Charlene Cullen, 30, (who is seen in the video below) things changed for the better.

"He was very embarrassed. It took a month before he told me what was wrong,” cullen said.

“It didn't bother me, but it did bother him and it made him very self conscious,” she added.

Cullen helped him raise the £3,000 ($4,800) for the cost to have the breast removed by a private doctor.

Now the breast is gone, and Farshad finally feels happy again.

He hopes that once the scar heals, he will start feeling “like a man” again.

“I just hope it doesn't come back,” he added.

Both Hopkins and the other sports fan were taken to a hospital.

Health and fitness expert loses 28 pounds in 24 hours to prove a point

Ross Edgley before and after weight loss
By: Sarah Weiss

Ross Edgley is a 28-year-old sports scientist and writer, who lost 24 pounds in just one day to prove his point about healthy eating.

Edgley did the experiment to help change the way people look at their diet and body, and to boost people’s self confidence.

Edgley wanted to show people that nutrition and self-esteem should not be governed by the scale.

“So many people are slaves to the scale and have their self-esteem and nutrition ruled by it. Hopefully, this experience will create a healthier relationship between people and the scale because people will realize that weight can fluctuate depending on many factors, not just fat," Edgley said.

Edgley noted that this was a dangerous experiment and was carried out under strict supervision of doctors, so no one should try this at home.

The main objective was to lose as much water as possible.

"As much as 50 to 70 percent of our body weight is water. So in theory, a person weighing 210 pounds would weigh 105 pounds without water.

By losing a lot of water from his body, Edgley weight 28 pounds less on just 24 hours.

“Cutting excess water from the body could be fatal as water is needed for vital organs to function and even to maintain a healthy blood volume,” he explained.

Edgley started his experiment weighing 208 pounds and reached 183 pounds when he was done.

Under doctors care, Edgley took some extreme measures to force the water out of his body, just to prove his point.

He began taking a hot bath with Epsom salt.

He drank some water flavored with diuretics (vitamin C, dandelion root, caffeine).

He did not have any carbohydrates or salt in his diet as salt is known to retain water.

He sat in the sauna and exercised at the gym.

In doing so, he managed to lose about 28 pounds, but he felt a little dizzy as a result.

Since the weight lost was only water, he put the weight back on in just a few hours after reaching his goal by drinking water.

Although the method is dangerous and unpleasant, Edgley managed to prove his point that “weighing yourself is an inaccurate measure of body fat and self-esteem.”

(Scroll down for video) Police are looking to arrest and charge a man, who posed as a police officer and sexually assaulted a woman, according to police reports in Texas.

Carrollton Police said that a man posing as a police officer sexually assaulted a woman handcuffed in the back seat of his car on Thursday morning, on I-35E between Valley View Lane and Valwood Parkway exits.

Between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m., a female driver was detained by a man driving a four-door dark-colored car with dark tinted windows and blue lights inside the windshield.

The suspect told the woman to get out of her car, handcuffed her, and placed in the back of his car, where the assault occurred, according to police spokesperson Nicole Rodriguez.

The suspect is described as a white male in his 30s or 40s, between 5 feet 5 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall with a medium build. He has short gray hair. He wore a dark blue uniform with long sleeves, a gold badge with a star shape, a name tag with gold numbers on it, a belt with a police baton, handcuffs, and sunglasses.

The victim did not see a gun or radio on his belt and did not remember seeing any light outside the suspect's vehicle, which had vinyl seats, but did not have a prisoner cage.

New York teacher warns parents not to send their smelly kids to school

By: John Roberts

(Scroll down for video) A New York teacher, who couldn't take the bad smell of her students, sent home a letter warning parents not to send their dirty children to school.

Some parents of students at B.U.I.L.D. Academy in Buffalo, are fuming after receiving a handwritten complaint letter by the pre-kindergarten teacher of their children.

The note sent home with students read: "Several children in Pre-K, ages 3 and 4, are coming to school with dirty, stained, or soiled clothes. Some emit unpleasant odors, and some are dirty and unkept.”

The teacher continued by asking parents to treat the matter as a health and safety issue. The teacher also said that the bad smell makes it difficult to teach.

Many parents were outraged saying that the teacher has to exercise more compassion as an educator in the community of Buffalo. According to the Census Bureau statistics of 2007 to 2011, Buffalo had 29.9 percent of its population living below the poverty level.

The school said that the teacher’s note was sent without the permission of the principal, and the school nurse is equipped with clean clothes for any student who needs it.

Meanwhile, no action has been taken against the teacher.

(Scroll down for video) Neighbors are angry after learning that a developer plans to build a new sex offender trailer park in Apopka, Florida.

Some residents are extremely worried of the influx of sex offenders after the owner of an existing sex offender village bought another property with 37 units.

The trailer home park sits near neighboring homes with families.

All 37 units will probably be occupied by a sex offender.

"We were told that they would have nothing but sex offenders back there," Bonnie McCleod, a concerned neighbor said.

"I’m very, very, very scared about this," another neighbor, Margaret Holman, said.

The owner of Overland Village Park, already runs a successful village for sex offenders.

Lori Nassofer has successfully operated Lake Shore Village, along Orange Blossom Trail, where more than a hundred sex offenders rent houses.

4 people kicked out from bar for being too nice

Workers at a pub in Sweden, told authorities that they expelled four customers because they were being too nice.

The four foreign men have reported the pub in Stockholm to the police after they were denied drinks. The men told police that they believe it was because of their skin color, but pub employees told police it was because the men were unusually pleasant.

The customers said that they were completely sober, and police who called to the scene, confirmed that none of them were drunk. Other customers also told police that the men were sober.

One of the employees told police during questioning that the men were acting so nice that they must have been on drugs.

"One of the men began waving his arms," the bartender told police, adding that “the man acted as if he knew the employees.”

"He said: 'Hello my friend, is everything alright with you?’” The employee also said.

The men told police that they were denied drinks because of their black skin color.
