Alana Saarinen with her mother Sharon Saarinen
By: Moses Gold

(Scroll down for video) While it only takes two people to make a child, one girl from Michigan, was “made” from three people.

Alana Saarinen is a normal 13-year-old girl, but there's something exceptional about her, she has three biological parents.

This came about when Alana was conceived with the genetic material of three people.

Her mother and father, Sharon and Paul Saarinen, provided the egg and sperm, through in vitro fertilization, and another woman contributed the genes to Alana Saarinen through her mitochondria.

When it comes to baby making, if the mother's mitochondria are excessively mutated, then the baby can be born with many health problems.

In the late 1990s, a doctor came up with the processes of introducing somebody else's mitochondria into the sperm and eggs of the child’s parents in order to help avoid potential future health problems for the child.

The result: three parents and a baby.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration ordered doctors to stop using this method as there is not enough scientific proof that it works.

Efforts to legalize the practice are ongoing.

Alana Saarinen's mother said the proof is in her daughter, as the girl has never been sick with anything more than the flu.

“So those looking for proof that it works,” the mother said, “look no further than my daughter.”
