Boston Police said that a woman was killed on Tuesday, after the drawbridge she was walking on started to rise.

Investigators are calling the death, which occurred on the Meridian Street Bridge shortly after noon, an accident.

The victim has been identified as 46-year-old Aura Garcia.

Her daughter said that her mother was going to a medical appointment in Chelsea, at the time of the accident.

Police said the bridge operator was unaware that Garcia was on the drawbridge when it was raised to allow a boat to pass below.

The bridge operator heard a scream and immediately lowered the bridge, but then Garcia became trapped between the plates of the bridge and suffered massive trauma.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said that the operator of the bridge was taken to a hospital for evaluation. He has also been placed on unpaid leave.

The bridge over the Chelsea River between East Boston and Chelsea was closed for several hours after the incident.
