(Scroll down for video) A young girl quickly sprung into action when her mother went into labor, according to rescue workers in Illinois.
Despite her age, 9-year-old Alyssa Meza showed her mother that she can handle a crisis.
Meza delivered her baby sister after her mother went into labor in Chicago.
“She said that she felt the baby popping out, and I told her to push the baby out and I’ll catch her,” Alyssa said.
“My mother was frightened, and I caught the baby, took a towel and wrapped her around.” she said.
Alyssa also untangled the umbilical cord, which was around the neck of her sister, an important step that she said she learned about after seeing a medical television program.
Both the mother of Alyssa, Monique Meza, and the baby were taken to a local hospital after a neighbor called 911.
With an ability to act calmly and quickly in a crisis, Alyssa said she hoped someday to become a paramedic. Her mother is very proud of her.
“I am surprised that she is so mature,” Monique Meza said. “I know she has a bright future ahead of her,” she added.
