(Scroll down for video) Authorities have cracked down hard on former New York police officers and firefighters who cheated Social Security, according to police reports.
106 of former police officers and firefighters were being accused on Tuesday, of falsifying psychiatric problems in order to obtain federal disability benefits.
The suspects have been charged in a 205 count indictment for cheating between $30,000 and $50,000 a year on fabricated claims that they were incapacitated by severe psychiatric disorders.
Many said that their response to the attacks of September 11, 2001 were responsible for their psychiatric conditions.
Investigators said that the scam dated back more than two decades, with former officials and other workers claiming mental problems so severe that they could not work at all.
Among those arrested was a retired police officer, who has since worked helping union members, and the Detectives Endowment Association with disability claims in an office in Queens. He has been suspended without pay.
