Many people were shocked to see that Google Maps for some reason renamed a Berlin square to Adolf Hitler Platz, according to photos uploaded to the Internet.
A spokesperson for the German unit of the U.S. Internet giant, Lena Wagner, said that it was not clear how Theodor Heuss-Platz, which is located in the German capital, had become Adolf-Hitler-Platz late on Thursday. The square carried that name from 1933 to 1947.
“We were made aware about it and we corrected it immediately,” the spokesperson said.
“We apologize for this error,” she added.
The error caused outrage on social networks and the German media, with the top-selling newspaper asking: “How could this happen?”
Some speculate that Google Maps might have been hacked.
