A Brooklyn car thief nearly killed himself after jumping into the icy waters of Manhattan Beach, in order to escape from police, according to rescue workers in New York.
The Fire Department New York said that Steven Fishman, 20, who allegedly slipped into the campus of Kingsborough Community College in order to steal cars, had to be pulled from the icy waters off Manhattan Beach when he jumped to avoid capture.
Campus security officials said that when Fishman was trying to get into a vehicle around 1:00 p.m., a chase began.
Fishman jumped into the cold water off Manhattan Beach, but soon regretted his decision and called for help.
Firefighters jumped into the water while Fishman shouted “Are you the police? Are you a cop?”
“He must have been in the water for a while. His heart rate began to fall,” a firefighter said. “A few more seconds and he could have gone under,” he said.
Fishman was rushed to Coney Island Hospital.
He was charged with theft, resisting arrest, unauthorized use of a vehicle and criminal possession of stolen property.
A firefighter was also taken to Coney Island Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.
