A man who was in love with the mother of his baby, decided to marry the woman so they can live as a happy family.
When his girlfriend did not want to marry him voluntarily, the man tried to force her into marriage.
Police said that Thomas Martin Pfeiffer, 22, of Washington, kidnapped his girlfriend along with their 22-month-old daughter on Thursday night.
He then set out on a 1,000 mile drive to Las Vegas, Nevada, to get married.
Valdez made it clear that she did not want to make the trip, but told police that Pfeiffer refused to let her out of the car and threatened her with a knife.
The couple stopped at a motel for the night. Valdez said that she did not say anything because there were very few people around and she did not feel safe.
The next morning, when they stopped at a gas station in Baker City, Oregon, she got out of the car and asked people to call the police.
Pfeiffer was arrested and is facing several charges including kidnapping, assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
Kidnapping in Oregon, carries a prison sentence of five years and 10 months. His bail was set at $155,500.
