(Scroll down for video) An elderly woman was hospitalized after a raccoon jumped into her bed and assaulted her, hospital officials in Massachusetts said.

Now, the 73-year-old is recovering at home after being mauled by a rabid raccoon.

Ginny Ballou of Hingham, said that a raccoon managed to get into her house through a pet door on her back porch.

“It was something I will never forget,” the woman said.

She said that she was asleep when the animal jumped on her face.

“At first I thought it was my cat. It bit my lip and chin. It just held on and would not let go,” she said.

Ballou said she fought the animal for nearly two minutes, until she finally hit it with a phone next to the bed. She chased it out of the room and called the police.

The animal was captured and tests showed it had rabies. It was later euthanized.

She was treated in a hospital and is receiving rabies shots.
