(Scroll down for video) Facebook now allows its U.S. users to select gay options under the gender menu, the company announced in a statement.
The company said that it allows users to select from a list of fifty options, including bi-gender, transgender, androgynous and transsexual.
“This will allow people to express themselves in an authentic way,” Facebook said in a post.
Users can also choose whether they want to be referred to as he, she or they.
The new options are available for those who use the site in U.S. English.
The new options were introduced after consultation with five major gay rights and transgender organizations.
“For most people the new options mean nothing, but for the gay community, it makes a big difference,” the company said.
